Catalan for English speakers
Let's stress again that we want courses in Catalan from English!
Everyone should be in support of adding Catalan, since:
-
It's a minority language: In the states where it is used, except Andorra. These languages need to be supported by principle. Also, Catalan is not a FULLY official language of the European Union, which makes it all the more important to support it
-
It's a sizeable language: It's somewhere between Norwegian and Swedish in size.
-
It's a path to some degree of trilingualism(!): It's relatively easy to learn for speakers of Spanish or French, and it increases knowledge in Spanish and French for those who learn it. Naturally, it contributes to the understanding of other Romance languages as well: Occitan, Portugese, Italian ...
More reasons?

There is a Klingon course (an artificial language from a TV series) in the incubator, and nobody cares about a language spoken in Catalonia, Valencia, the Balearic Islands and a region in the south of France? (Sorry if I have made any mistake, English is not my mother tongue). I have the Catalan course available because my mother tongue is Spanish, and in fact right now I live in Catalonia, and I think it's an interesting language to learn. I don't know wether there are any course of Catalan for English speaker available somewhere, but it should be.
Haha, excellent point! :) I've actually decided to give the CA/ES course a go, but my Spanish is sooo weak, way weaker than my Catalan. But if it works out, it's a great opportunity for me to practice both languages.
That's actually another good reason to add a Catalan-English course, isn't it?
- If you learn basic Catalan and Spanish, you can take the Catalan-from-Spanish course and practice both languages at the same time.
I think there was a rumor floating around that they were going to add Catalan for French speakers, but of course it's just a rumor. I think a Catalan for English speakers course would be pretty easy to make. I just completed the tree a little while ago. But they are not focusing on adding languages for English speakers, so it will be neglected for a bit.
But there are so many of us English speakers ... :/ And now that there is a Catalan course available, wouldn't it be VERY easy to create a course by adapting the existing one for another source language? Or is the Cat/Esp course customised to address Spanish-speaking people specifically?
I guess the Cat/Esp is the most relevant, since there probably is a large group of monolingual Spaniards and South Americans in Catalonia.
