I tried "Nem angol vagyok, én magyar." It seems awkward to me, but also truer to the English sentence. Would this require another vagyok at the end?

It breaks the logic of the sentence. "Not English but Hungarian" vs. "Not I am but Hungarian." (literally).

I wrote the same, "Nem vagyok angol, hanem magyar" and it was accepted

The translation is weird. There is no but in English, so why is there a hanem in Hungarian? Shouldn't it be "Nem angol vagyok, magyar vagyok"?
