Okay, I get how instrumentals work. With cheese is peynirle. But what about for words like portakal that end in l? Is is just portakalli (that last I should be dotless) or is there a buffer letter, like portakalili or something?

It would be "portakalla." No buffer letter needed :)

(Also, don't get the instrumental and the suffix used for deriving adjectives meaning containing mixed up!)

Firstly. Peynir+li and Portakal+lı are the correct forms. And I have to tell that this question you have asked is not a simple question and it's a subject we have studied in Turkish grammar lessons for a month. But simply I can tell that Turkish language has two basic rules. Büyük ünlü uyumu and Küçük ünlü uyumu. You have to know this rules. And in this case; If a word has eiöü vovels than you have to continue with with eiöü vovels. If aıou then it must be aıou. So Tuz (aıou) + lu (aıou), Su (aıou) + lu (aıou), Kir (eiöü) + li (eiöü), Güneş (eiöü) + li (eiöü).

there are 2 equivalents for 'with' in english

1- if you mean the content of something, you should use -lı,li,lu,lü

For example tea with milk: sütlü çay

2-if you mean an action that is made together, you should use -le, la

For example i go to the cinema with her: onunla sinemaya gidiyorum
