Isn't "Spielzeuge" the plural of "Spielzeug"?

Usually, "Spielzeug" is used in the singular only. It does have a plural form, but it's rare.

Every reference I have seen says Zeug can be used for singular or plural, and it doesn't have any different plural form. Can you provide some reference for Zeuge?

Why is 'Spielzeuge sind sinnvoll hingegen' wrong?

"sinnvoll" is the predicate adjective of "Spielzeuge", and so it comes at the end. I couldn't find a great example on the web of the rules, but have a look here and search for "predicate adjective" - http://www.dartmouth.edu/~german/Grammatik/WordOrder/WordOrder.html
