What would be a good way of asking "Above or below?"

Από πάνω ή από κάτω;

"under" in Greek would be "κάτω από ..." example: "under the table" = "κάτω από το τραπέζι"

up or down implies movement, whereas I thought πανω and κατω refer to position.

Colloquially, it can be used to imply movement as well.

so - only απώ tells us whether this is "above or below" or "up or down"? Is that right?

Could you please clarify? There's no απώ
OK, you mean από combined with πάνω or κάτω! Yes, that's what converts up/πάνω and down/κάτω to above and below.

If anyone ever needed a reminder that spelling matters, here you are! :P

Oh dear. And how! Not only all the " i" orthography problems coming from English but also the omikron or omega problem. I am beginning to feel very sorry for Greek primary school children!
