Celebrating (not) my 1000-day streak.
Today I should be celebrating my 1000-day streak. I would have put in an extra effort to make it coincide with finishing my Russian tree. Instead, I lost my streak. And it's not even my fault. I have written repeatedly to the one DL engineer who they say sometimes repairs streaks. She has given no acknowledgement of even reading the messages. I have written to a few moderators. Lindakanga asked me all the details, and wrote a report and submitted it to the staff, together with her well-wishes.
A few days after the report was submitted, there was a day where I had no streak at all, just a few dashes where there should have at least been the new streak. My lingots had also been decimated. Hope swelled in my heart. Maybe they were repairing my streak!
But alas, the next day the new streak reappeared.
Would you like to know how this all happened?
I had back-to-school night and had to speak in front of all the parents. It is stressing. I was happy to drink two glasses of good red wine afterwards. I forgot about Duolingo. My streak freeze kicked in though.
The next night I didn't get online until around 11:45. I saw friends had commented on my stream. I responded to these comments. Then when I went to do my daily lesson, I got a blank page with "Too many requests" written in the top left corner.
I panicked. I tried opening Duo in another browser. That didn't work. I opened the app on my phone. That worked, but midnight had passed. I had lost my streak. I immediately reported the event, writing to this Duolingo employee who is currently ignoring me. I know there are millions of us, and only dozens of them, but still ... you would think they could at least write a few lines to someone who is a dedicated user, who has nearly three thousand followers, comments in the forums, helps with grammar questions, helps add accepted translations, used to do quality-control checks on the sponsored translations, uses Duolingo in her classes, has finished four trees and has four level 25's, and... should have a thousand-day streak.
But no. I am all alone. In another of these recent days the platform unabashedly even told me so. My activity stream disappeared, as did all my friends. "You're all alone, jairapetyan." And so it was, on my (not) 1000-day streak. But today it would be 1,001, and all my friends and followers are back. Bless you all! I guess I have to get over the number, it's not 1,001, but 28, third round.
I lost my streak ages ago
For I started when it was first possible
however my computer was broken
and i lacked the money to buy a new one
so there were many months
however life is beautiful
out and about
speaking to people
laughing , smiling, enjoying
you have always been a star
with or without streak
we recognise you
as a positive force
got into the world
with a dance
and a smile
all the best
Jack Elliot, you are awesome. I could not reply immediately because anything I write would be such an anti-climax after your poetry. All I can say is that I appreciate your post and your camaraderie over these years. Here are a few lingots, which you can take as flowers, or as sparkling rubies or lights.
you are more than welcome
your friends are more important than the streak
enjoy the day .
You have truly done remarkable things with your time here on Duolingo. You have inspired so many. And I for one am very glad for your participation in the forums (and my stream). :)
It is true that staff have stopped responding to requests for Streak help. They announced in the Help page that they have stopped recovering streaks for people who have lost them. I kind of doubt that staff check messages left on their streams in general, save a once in a blue moon curious glance, considering how much people message them with "hello" and "I have a suggestion" and "asdlfkalsdfj;alkfj" etc. So, I don't think it is intended as a personal snub that they haven't gotten back to you, simply that they have pulled back to direct paid time to the tasks they see as most pressing.
As for the too many requests error, this has been showing up for many people who are using userscripts. I don't know if that is what happened in your case, but, if you get that error again, it might be worth looking into your browser settings and disable any userscripts that might be running. This is unfortunately among the multitude of risks that we gamble with when using unauthorized userscripts.
I do not want to downplay the impact losing your streak has had. I too lost one very close to 1,000 days. Those are a lot of days to focus into a goal and the streak is a badge of triumph, standing witness to perseverance through any number of struggles the rest of us cannot see from where we are on our side of the screen. So, I am very sorry that the marker of your phenomenal streak has reset.
Thank you Usagiboy for your kind words. Kindness is the trait I consider most important in life and in you it is a constant shining light. You are correct, I have more than one userscript installed and in particular I had re-installed one recently which is important to how I evaluate my students as it lets me see their trees. I just turned them off now! As I said, maybe they couldn't repair the streak because of them. As far as the feeling of a personal snub goes, it is supported by the fact that after I wrote to bc the very moment I lost my streak, a user named TourmAlvine also wrote her that he lost his streak. His has been repaired. When did it happen that they announced they would stop repairing streaks?
Ah, I did not realize that any streaks at all were being replaced. That ads a bit of salt. I'm sorry :(
As for when they announced it, it came with the Help page, not in the forums as far as I know. I can't recall when the help page arrived, only that it was some time ago.
Oh it was just a figure of speech :) I meant it like maybe you could save that image to your computer for posterity or something.
Also, thanks for the 10 Imperial credits! :)
Dear La Profe,
CONGRATULATIONS / felicitaciones / Congratulazioni / Grattis / Поздравляю / Glückwünsche / Parabéns / Gratulerer / Gefeliciteerd / gratulojn / מזל טוב / Συγχαρητήρια
That is an enormous achievement.
Also I pass on my condolences regarding the loss of the streak. I know this is not the comfort I would like to be able to give you. My thoughts are with you at this loss.
Thank you for letting me though celebrate your success.
May you continue to find Duo an inspiring companion to your language learning for yet another 1,000 days.
Thank you for all you do and have done, and for your philosophical thoughts trying to keep things in perspective. As you can see I have not given up, and when the streak will be repaired you will pat yourself on the back knowing that it would not have happened without you.
Once I heard that one of my suggestions was discussed among DL employees - I propose that an icon is added that shows our longest streak. If they only would do that!
I have more to say, but I have already written much. Now it is time to wait again and see.
Please know, there is an excellent chance that the streak may not be repaired.
This is as the streak - in the end - when you look at the big picture - it is not what is giving you your language learning.
It is the actual effort that you put in that gives that to you.
The streak - is just a bell and whistle. A carrot.
It is what you really do - for the benefit of your own learning that matters.
And if everyone was always able to hold their streak - regardless of mishaps that happen - for whatever reason, then it loses part of why it is so special.
I also have lost a very significant streak. I do know how it hurts.
One of my poems say to me :
It does not matter how far you fall,
But how you choose to again stand tall.
It is the choice to stand again tall - that is the true inspiration - in ever so many things.
My thoughts are with you my friend. * kanga hugs *
Also - to mention, in going through your story. The "system" did give you the option to "continue your streak", if you purchased for money a streak freeze. So I would say you were in a test group for this streak freeze purchase.
Please take the time to read this announcement from 4 months ago - regarding this exact issue :
State of Monetization at Duolingo posted by Luis
In reading this, and also reading of your full story, it does sound that you were part of a test group.
Again, sending you another * hug *.
Please do know that you are a valued learner. Do not doubt that. I leave the analysis of this situation in your competent hands. For I also have trust in you, and your ability to work things out.
I know this does not make it easier emotionally. In these circumstances, I do allow myself to listen to my emotions. However I do not allow my emotions to drive me, to do things that are not in my best interests, or in the best interests of the community that I love very deeply. I comfort my emotions, and work out how again - I can work towards my real goals in life.
Dear La Profe, I don't know how you feel, but I understand losing such a large streak is big. It's disappointing that you've not even got acknowledgement from the DL engineer. That said, you're not alone. You're an amazing person. You're an achieve. You speak in tongues. You're good with languages. You're a fine translator. You have talent. You're special. You're an important member of this community. You have a future. You have dedication to this community, Duolingo, shown in your steak and that is why the loss is so big, and so I sincerely pray you will get back your streak. You will have much to celebrate in your future. Huge kanga hug. ~Mark : )
Hi Linda, I must have not communicated clearly. It is quite the opposite. I am angry because the system did not give me the chance to repair my streak for money, even though they do for other users. Specifically, for iOS users only. I even got an iPad an logged on looking for the option, but apparently it is offered only at the moment or soon afterwards.
My friend, I will continue to hope. However - please know - I will not be patting myself on the back about this issue one way or the other.
Again, thank you for the great gifts you bring to our community, in ever so many ways.
Please, I am hoping, regardless of the outcome, that you can continue to keep the bigger and important picture in mind.
Do not doubt your value and importance of your real achievements.
Thank you for choosing to be part of this community, and to chose to contribute to it in a positive way for yourself, and for the community around you.
Also I apologize if I have just recently misunderstood things. Thank you for keeping your calm on this issue.
It is greatly appreciated - for a number of different reasons.
It's strange, when I lost my streak I did not have the total body shock of adreniline that has happened when I only thought I had lost my streak. I have felt pretty calm all along. Just a little angry over the indifference of the Powers That Be, and the fact that they effectively favor iPhone users by offering those users a streak repair, while platform, Android and Windows users are left out. I am doing what I can, but really have not gone mad (not more than normal that is). =D. Thanks again for writing that report, and for your continuing emotional support. The kind words that are flowing in due to this post is really consoling. I won't leave this community on a caprice.
Hello!!! Here is a small present for you:
I remember that your comment made me laugh so hard that I decided to "immortalize" it creating that picture! I never expected I would get so many lingots out of it =P
I wish you the best on overcoming your streak loss! It must be hard to go through that I'm sure.
Alejandro eres un verdadero amigo. Gracias. I love making people laugh and that remains the best joke I have ever managed. But your present of Putin was more compensation than I could have ever imagined. I have students who are crazy over memes, but then Putin! And originality! Wow. It was such an honor. And thank you again for reposting. Here are a few lingots for you y un abrazo virtual.
Congratulations on 1000 days!! It does not seem that long ago that I was congratulating you on 800. I hope that your streak returns, but even if it does not, know that I am equally impressed that you got right back up and kept going.
Thank you Jim... but it is not really a thousand days now, only 26. I have kept going but I really am faltering... it is so disappointing that staff couldn't care less about their users. They have been notified of the incident and they could write five words in response. I have had thoughts of quitting DL and using Mango instead.
To me its 1000, I know you did it. :) I hope you stick around. Czech, Romanian, Swahili coming soon, not to mention all of us fun people... how can you leave all that :D I know your upset, I don't blame you, I would be too. I told you before I quit for like six months when I lost my 14 day streak, and that was my fault. It was dramatic too, It was back in the days of hearts. I had like 2 questions and 1 heart at like 11:57. I caved under the pressure and knew it was gone.
I'm still thinking good thoughts, it could still work out.
Luscinda, thanks for adding your voice to this discussion. I am honored. I know you are right, but it is still disappointing.
Oh, stuff them. Let's have a thread party for you anyway. You choose some music links and we'll all bring wine and cheese.
Check your mailbox Jack, surely it's there. All are invited, friends, followers, even the user who wrote something silly and others downvoted them. At the party they will realize why it's fun to learn so many languages!
Jim, you sure hit the nail on the head. The social aspect will keep me coming back. Duolingo is like Facebook on steroids for people who love learning languages. :) Thanks again for your positive thoughts and kind words.
I don't know who voted that down (I think your complaint is more than legitimate) but I've voted it back up and added a lingot into the mix. For mine the streak freeze system needs an overhaul. You should be able to buy a reasonable number of days of streak freeze at a time, especially as a lot of Duolingo users are learning a language to travel overseas - where connecting to Duo in a timely manner each day may or may not be possible, depending on your schedule and ability to sniff out WiFi. If you could buy up to say 5 streak freezes at a time it would circumvent problems like that, as well as problems like yours. Still, you did the big 4 figures, and that can never be taken away from you.
I voted it down by accident. Or on accident, as young people say nowadays! Fixed it now when I noticed the big red arrow! Your comments are so true. I actually lost my streak six months into my DL experience due to travel. I had even purchased wifi time at an airport but because I had to board a plane I wasn't able to complete my plan to log in some XP. It was traumatic. I quit DL for six months. Yes, I really think they should revise the system, and at least show our longest streak. Some people morally object to a streak freeze, so of course those users wouldn't approve of a longer one, or of being able to repair a streak for money. But in the end that would bring revenue to DL. Also, headquarters do whatever they please.
Congratulations - on your 1000-day achievement. Hoping that DL will repair your streak! I wish that DL would add a Total Active Day Badge. Best wishes on your continued language learning journey! :)
I like that idea, Chris! Let's lobby for it. Just to find out your name I saw your story, and the accompanying quote. It's at the same time sad but inspiring. Glad to see you are rebuilding. Here are a few lingots to express my appreciation that you took the time to post. Keep up the great work.
On the day in question you're talking about, I also had difficulty navigating the site at the time it took about 2 hours to get credit for the day. I remember thinking, at least my streak now is 100-days and not something more. Thank you for the Lingots! :)
Wonderful work and tenacity! I understand the loss of you magnificent streak, and I can picture you that evening speaking to all the parents, and still keeping your own learning going as well - for all those days! But to top off losing the streak with not getting a response is especially hard. You can add your streak to the Streak Hall of Fame, even lost streaks have a section, those are the bravest of all! Here is the link https://www.duolingo.com/comment/18071934
Thank you Camilla. :) That steak Hall of Fame is awesome, and I love the alumni section, even if we are not moving upwards. Thanks for pointing it out!
Congratulations on your 1000 days streak.
I only hope that the good wishes and esteem shown here to which I add my own and the many, many more from those who may not have seen your post are a small compensation for the loss of your stream...at a 1000 days no less. My streak now shows 15 days having lost it twice in the 3 plus years I've been here. The first time was the hardest but it's never easy. One thing in your post I must disagree with. You say you are alone, far from it those of us here now are only a tiny part of the many friends and admirers you have earned on Duo. And although I have never studied Spanish I think the post above mine says it so well.
Well said Jaye. Yes, these comments do compensate. And if it isn't repaired I am actually thinking I should let it reset once a month on purpose, just so I do not become so driven by it. Face it, it is kind of stupid to log in at 11:45 pm with the intent to just prolong your streak when really what you need is a good night's sleep, and you can do a whole hour of good practice the following day.
As for my saying I was alone, it was a reference to a message that came out about a week ago and many people saw. Our profile and activity streams disappeared, along with our followers. And that was the message on the page. It literally said, "You're all alone, jairapetyan."
I certainly do not feel alone here with the many people I have had friendly conversations with. In fact, linguistically Duolingo is not as good as some other programs (such as Mango), but it is the community and the game-like platform that makes me love it. Really, above all it's the social aspect. I wish we could have a huge Duolingo party some day, and we could all meet each other. Hey, maybe that will be my next post!
Thanks so much for writing. Take care.
Yes, I avoid looking at the steak and now realize it's not as important as the work. As for staying up past midnight... I've done it too but have also turned over a new leaf.
Duo should find a more positive way of telling us we have no friends when what they mean is there is a glitch because whatever the Duobot says we do have friends. No doubt about it Duo beats them all with is community spirit
Eres una gran profesora. Este es un regalo para ti. mi querida españa" de cecilia.
Ánimos desde España :)
Te queremos mucho, es una suerte la de tus alumnos, de tener una docente como tú y que tanto ama el idioma español. Keep going! :)
Dear jairapatyan, I'm sorry if i was rude in my last comment. I guess I did not read the story very well. I hope you will forgive me, Evapatt
I guess I have already forgiven you, as I do not remember your last comment. No worries. :)
I have read your story, and this question came into my mind. Why are we so obsessed with our streaks? Okay, yes, you are a dedicated user and all that, but are we not here to learn another language? We are not here to brag about our streaks, or how many lingots we have, or what level we are on! We are here to LEARN. I am sorry if I have offended anyone with this comment, I just want to know why we even give a thought to our streaks, lingots and followers when we are here to learn!
I think that "obsessed" is a word that is as strong as it is inaccurate. I don't believe that anyone is "obsessed" with their streak. However it is one of the few tangible (that's the important qualifying word) motivators. It's exactly the same with exercising, or with photography, or with a bunch of other activities that require regular practice. Doing it regularly helps KEEP you doing it regularly. If you let it slide for a day, it's easier to let it slide for another day. And another. And another. And suddenly you can't remember how verbs are conjugated.
Isn't keeping your tree gold a motivator? Yes and no. First, you have no control over when subjects decay, and second I know for mine that there are things within some of my gold topics that I will have forgotten and need to manually remember to revise. I doubt that I'm the only one.
Isn't learning in itself the motivator, as you said? Obviously, but that comes back to the problem of "tangible". We all know how learning a language works; you learn things, you forget things, you relearn things, you learn new things, you forget other things. It's not a linear progression and your progress is not easily measurable. But one thing is; that little orange flame. When you feel bored with learning, when you want to just slacken off (and let's be honest, it happens to almost if not everybody) one thing that can push you to come back and keep putting in an effort is keeping that flame burning. Conversely having it reset to zero can be an extreme de-motivator for the same reason, and make it easier to just "not bother", which is why I agree with jairapetyan that it would probably be better to have "longest streak" as well as "current streak" with the added incentive to beat your previous longest one. Maybe it doesn't work for everyone, but I have no doubt that it works for some. That doesn't make it an obsession any more than keeping an exercise diary is for most people.
Beautifully expressed. Thank you for answering Maddie's question. I think streaks are over-rated and I certainly am not obsessed by it, but I am a bit angry that I had to start over because of a glitch -- and that DL staff ignores my pleas. I mean, I do put energy into DL as a total volunteer, as well as constantly spread their fame by requiring my students to use it and by talking about it to so many people; and you think that they would care enough about me, appreciate me enough to just answer a question. At least blow me off! I've heard people comment that indifference is worse than hatred, and now I understand the meaning of that.
