What's the problem with "A lot of musicians and artists work in the streets in Istanbul"?

My answer should be accepted as it is correct English. It was: Many musicians and artists work on the streets of Istanbul.

There is an apparent discrepancy between one of the officially excepted answers and the English translation above. I would translate "utcákon" as "on the streets" (as above). On the question page the accepted answer uses "in the streets", which does not seem correct.

on the streets of Istanbul sounds more idiomatic than on the streets in Istanbul
