Language partners that won’t judge you. Fear of embarrassment is one of the largest barriers faced by language learners. Who wants to sound stupid in front of others? This is why Duolingo’s team of PhDs has developed an artificial intelligence solution to the problem. By practicing with funny, friendly and fully interactive AI buddies, extroverts and introverts alike will now be able to prepare for realworld dialogues. Your virtual language tutors. Learning to speak is not only daunting: it’s inaccessible to most language learners. In standard language classrooms, the majority of the time is spent in silence listening to teachers, so speaking practice is reserved to those who can afford to travel abroad or hire personal tutors. Furthering Duolingo’s mission of making language education accessible to all, Bots are here to democratize conversation. The most advanced way to learn a language. Duolingo has used machine learning to personalize lessons since the very beginning, but the introduction of AIpowered conversations takes that experience to another level. Unlike most chatbots so far, Duolingo Bots accept and react to thousands of unique responses. The more users interact with them, the smarter they become. Feeling stuck during a chat? Hitting “help me reply” at any moment provides users with response suggestions to jog their memory. Language learners can also tap on unfamiliar words while chatting with the Bots to see realtime translations or hear pronunciation. “One of the main reasons people learn languages is to have conversations,” said Luis von Ahn, CEO and cofounder of Duolingo. “Students master vocabulary and comprehension skills with Duolingo, but coming up with things to say in reallife situations remains daunting. Bots offer a sophisticated and effective answer to that need,” he added. Interactions currently take place in text chat form, but spoken conversations are on their way. Bots are available in the latest version of the Duolingo iOS app for users learning French, Spanish and German. Other languages are coming soon.
