How do you get past the parts where you have to speak using the mic?

I'm on lesson one, and every time there is a part where I have to say a phrase using the mic, I'm not able to "check" or "continue". I pronounce the phrases with correct pronounciation, but nothing happens. If I skip it, I lose a heart.

Anyone know what's going on?

I believe if you go to your preferences, you can turn the mic off and then you won't be given any speaking portions. I haven't had a mic at all through any of my lessons and haven't been asked to say anything. During the initial account set up it asks about whether you'd like to set up a mic, so you must have done it then and now it expects you to have one all the time.

Yep. Just confirmed. Click on your username in the upper right, click on settings, turn mic off on first page of settings.

This is happening to me too. At first the mic checks worked fine (and it didn't matter if I just said gibberish; it still marked it correct). Now, sometimes it records what I say but never lets me check or continue. It's not clear to me if the mic checks are actually looking at what you say or not. I don't really want to turn them off because at least it's an opportunity to practice.

My speech input is not working. What can I do?

Duolingo requires the Adobe Flash plugin to accept speech input, so first ensure that you have Flash installed. If Flash is installed but speech input is still not working, try refreshing the web page in your browser. If this does not fix the problem, try closing and reopening the browser. If none of these solutions work, make sure you do not have any browser extensions installed that would block the Flash plugin. Some extensions known to interfere with Flash include Ghostery, Adblock, Flashblock, and DNT.

My sound is not working. What can I do?

First, ensure that your volume is turned up and that sound is working properly elsewhere on your computer. If the sound only appears to be broken in Duolingo's lessons, try refreshing the web page in the browser. If this does not fix the problem, try closing and reopening the browser.

From Duolingo Help section.

This is really simple but it tripped me up the first time. You have to click the "stop" button when you're done speaking :)
