dutch closed and open syllables
i do not know when should a verb like spelen get an extra E with IK ... how do i know that i should add an extra E , so i say it ik speel .... what tells this ? another example , bewegen , with ik it is ik beweeg ... why did we add an extra E and when should i do that ... please help !!!!!!
As you said, it has to with open and closed syllables. A closed 'e' sounds like the e in bed, an open 'e' sounds like the a in play. To make the open e sound in a closed syllable, you spell it ee. When conjugating verbs, the sounds should stay the same.
So, with the verb spelen (spe-len), the e is open. To make it sound the same, that becomes ik speel. Ik spel (from the verb spellen, to spell), sounds different.
This works the same with a/aa, u/uu, o/oo, i/ie.
