A fydd hyn ddim yn gyfiethu i ' season of winter ' yn lle ' the season of winter' O ble mae'r THE yn dod os oes dim ond un ' Y '

The Welsh pattern aaa y bbb usually translates directly into English as 'the aaa of the bbb'. This is usually translated into more normal English as 'the bbb's aaa':

  • Gwely'r ci - 'The dog's bed' (the bed of the dog)

  • Tymor y gaeaf - 'The winter season' (instead of the 'The season of the winter' or 'The winter's season', neither of which are usual in good English)

Another example both of how a Welsh pattern often differs from its English equivalent, and of the need sometimes to adjust things to make sure that 'good Welsh' becomes 'good English' and vice versa.

tymor can also be used for 'term/semester'.

There's a good YouTube video by Welsh Plus that explains it: https://youtu.be/OUuvCwOHs2c
