New Features on iOS?

Earlier today I was looking through the app and found that I was not getting Lingots. I go to the store and all I see is 'Gems'. Also I see in the bottom hot bar that there is a new section 'Health'. This was very odd as I used the app about 20 minutes earlier and everything was normal. I check to see if there were any updates but I can't find anything. Has this happened to anyone else?

Dear Duolingo Developers, (and forum) I'm new to Duolingo - this app was highly recommended to me as a great way to learn a language, however this health feature (like a video game) puts a serious damper on my ability to spend time learning. I think it is a really bad feature and should be removed promptly, it is not conducive to an active learning experience and I may have to go to a different app if it remains. thanks for listening!

By the way, some people see 'lingots' in the title and just downvote automatically.

Suggestion: If you changed your post title to 'New health feature on iOS' or something similar, then you would get more interest and upvotes.

Question: Have the downvotes devolved to a popularity contest, in which they eliminate comments once those comments receive enough negative votes?

It used to be that upvotes and downvotes were just a way of agreeing or disagreeing with other people's comments. I know that a while ago I ran across a "hidden" comment from someone who supported a "hidden" comment that I had written, but he apparently had been downvoted as well!

No, in the sense that no comments nor discussions are eliminated based on votes.
Yes, in the sense that it's months (I'd say more than a year and think far more) that comments and discussions are hidden when their net total of votes is too negative.

It used to be that upvotes and downvotes were just a way of agreeing or disagreeing with other people's comments.

Upvoting are for that and to promote useful comments but I don't remember [staff ever saying] that downvotes were to be used when you disagree: they're meant for inappropriate comments, for comments giving wrong answer to other's question etc.

I believe one use of downvotes is to indicate what sort of content is welcome at Duolingo. We get a lot of posts from children, that are begging for (or offering) Lingots. I think the community is indicating that these posts are not relevant to Duolingo or language learning.

Unfortunately, I think some people don't read a post before voting, and will down vote purely based on the title. This is what I was refering to.

I always thought that downvotes were also used to indicate that someone's guess was incorrect. I have frequently said "I think _ is correct, but I'm not sure. Anyone care to comment?" I expected to open up discussions, but some never happened. Could downvoting be why I don't see some comments I made?

Technically the name is not gone yet, if the system doesn't work (which I hope it doesn't, it makes this application/website more pay based) they should revert to the old/current system.

So for your account, everything in Duo Store is "gem-buyable"? Not anymore "lingot-buyable"?

I would have thought gems would be there in addition to lingots:

  • lingots for equipping Bonus Skills, Owl's suit (on apps), tec.
  • gems for things relate to what Duo calls "health".

There are no lingots in the store and the only things you can buy are Health refills and Streak Freeze. Sadly just for these things you need to pay. If you buy 200 gems (currently the most possible) for £2.99 you can only buy a streak freeze three times.

Sadly just for these things you need to pay.

But strengthenning makes you earn gems, no? (Cf. your screenshot).
So you can "gem-buy" health and streak freeze without real money, no?

Strengthening does give you gems but it does take a long time to get a second amount of gems.

Surprisingly yes, a one day streak freeze is quite expensive. Getting 200 gems means you can only get it 3 times (180 gems)

Well, now that I think about it, the double or nothing would be a too easy way to earn gems if at the same time they rare hard to earn the other way(s). So it makes sense it'd disappear.

Duo costumes, after years they haven't been extended to web versions, so not surprising they'd disappear (and not a dramatic loss IMO ;) ).

Would you have the rate?

  • 1, 2, 5, 10, ... gem(s) earned per lesson strengthened?
  • 1, 2, 5, 10, ... gem(s) earned per skill strengthened?

It'll make the streak have back a "real" meaning. ;)

It'll depend on the answer to my previous question but if you can earn 60 gems within 1 week (counting you spent some to unlock some lessons sooner) then it'd look like a good balancing to me.

I was going to give you "thanks" lingots then I thought: where will they go?
Let me try to see if (as I'm pretty sure it'll be) they disappear from my account but doesn't appear on yours (until, maybe, the A/B test ends negatively: I don't believe it, Duo needs money...).

It's not a lesson based reward system but a sort of milestone achievement like the first lesson gives a reward, then it expands in length. But I do hate a health system that when you do one lesson it takes away 1 health, it really halts learning

I do think it's on purpose: to avoid users to "rush" for 2 hours then don't come back during some days (or forever). It's not totally meaningless. ;)

About gaining health: you also gain them every X hours, no? (cf. your screenshot).

Yes, you do gain 1 every hour but one subject (e.g. basics 1) does not count as one energy but every lesson (e.g. i, you, he/she) counts as one. So if you wanted to do 2 of these you would have to wait up to 5 hours to resume, depending on the length.

[Subquestion: it's 1 gem per hour per course you take? If not, it'll be hard to keep working on several courses...]
In such case you can take 4-5 lessons per day which is the average skills' length.

I really think Duo calibrated it like that exactly to try to push us to not take too much per day: "taking one skill per day is enough (more could be too much to memorize), if you really want more then work more or pay (real money)". To have more chance for us to come back the day after.

Oh, the "5 max" change it all (but I should have guessed it was like that: once your health is full, you don't accumulate "extra" ones, you have to "use" it first.

So the optimal use of Duo will be to come every 5 hours to take one lesson.
And sometimes taking two in a row with the few gems accumulated by finishing skills etc.

  • Maybe one "loses one gem" each time you answer wrongly? And one earns them at the and of each lessons?
    With "health" as in the first version of Duo where you had "3 lives" at each lessons and if at the 4th error the lesson ended and you didn't complete it.
  • Maybe they are associated with the tested version (I saw once screenshots in forums) where you have a delay (some hours) between finishing one line of skills and the unlocking of the next line?
    Maybe Duo let's you unlock it immediately for some gems?

It looks like they are trying time locks again but this time you can get past them with real money.

I have this too, I really don't like it and I don't feel like I can spend as much time learning to listen to the words and not just read them because I'm worried I'll lose my health... and now it's 4 hours or so between new health....

You can also wait until your account has it (which will be the case if and when this system pass its A/B test): you'll know then exactly how it works since you'll have it. ;)

I used to give lingots away often. Now I'm not sure it's a good idea, especially if someday I may have to pay for expensive streak freezes. They are very handy. Even though I check every day as soon as I have a chance, I occasionally go twenty-five or -six or -seven hours before I sit down to duoLingo, and then I gladly pay for the convenience. I don't like the rigidity of choosing the same time every day for duo b/c I do have a life. I appreciate duo, but all these changes are NOT for the better.

You probably don't need to worry about lingots anymore, the new system uses "gems". I'm not sure why they changed the name, but it did not carry my lingots.

I'm in the test on one of these. There is an option to strengthen called "earn health" where you can earn as much health as you want for free. So paying real money is not required in any way that I can see being in this test group.

Even if I had to pay £1 a month to help fund the app than have this ridiculous "Health" system. Are the project managers and creatives at Duolingo on crack? It's a language learning app please.

To clarify in my fortunate A/B testing experience iOS app: - Lingots are called "gems" - Gems now buy roughly 1000% less value than before - Prepared to monetise the whole app - Added Health which is the equivalant of trainer saying you can't lift more weights until you practice elsewhere or PAY me money now

I've never opened the app and felt so disappointed yet slightly stressed to learn. It's like a subtle feeling of being toyed with too.

I guess the numbers aren't on my side and I feel more sorry for those just trying Duolingo. But continue this way and I certainly could not recommend the app to anyone else. Why would I?

Apparently Duolingo does not like Apple MAC users since they only enabled Health and Gems on iOS. I'm not sure why they don't like iOS users and would use Health and Gems to discourage continued learning. The website states it helps prohibit 'binging' but what about learning from mistakes. I like the app and the approach they use to teach foreign languages but like I said, they only implemented Health for iOS which shows they are biased against iOS users. I'm currently reviewing, and encourage feedback on, AccelaStudy, iStart Spanish and Spanish Touch Trainer. If any iOS users have other suggestions for apps that don't penalize iOS users, please let us know what you've found!
