Hoşgeldiniz

Hoşgeldiniz is very popular among Turkish. It means Welcome.

My question is: What do you reply back when someone tells you Hoşgeldiniz?

I hear this answer, but correct me if I'm wrong. If it's correct, what does it mean? it's not making any sense for me!

hoşbulduk!

şimdiden teşekkürler

Hoşgeldiniz is the plural or the formal form of Hoşgeldin. If someone greets you as Hoşgeldin you have many options to respond back one and the oftenly used response is -yes- hoşbulduk. But you may also respond as hoşgördük. Or you may say "Hiç de hoş gelmedik" as a negative response. Which can be translated as "We did not come well at all."

So "hoşbulduk" means "we found well"?

Exactly! And it is correct write them seperate despite most of us writing it together. - Hoş geldin! - Hoş bulduk.

So it means we found each other?

No. It means I am pleased with what I/we found here. Hoş means pleasant. And you can say both hoş buldum and hoş bulduk.

Thanks, I accidently deleted my comment above. My Turkish teacher once told me that you cannot reply "hoş buldum" to "Hoş geldin!". But apparently both forms are possible.

But it doesn't make sense to say "I'm pleased with what I found" when someone just tells you "Welcome"

In English we replay "Thank You" and that's what I was using this summer when I was in Turkey "Teşekkürler" but I would know this isn't the right response.

what's the difference between bulduk & buldum?

Actually it makes pretty sense in Turkish. Because when we show someone something new and wonder his/her opinion about it we say "nasıl buldun?" which is literally meaning 'how you found it'. But actually we mean "What do you think about it" And in the sentence hoş buldum we mean the same.

I just asked my wife and she said that both replies are possible, but she thinks that "Hoş bulduk" is more common and a little bit politer than "Hoş buldum".
