And if he had stopped playing momentarily would it not be " αυτός σταμάτησε να παίξει" ?

Bonjour Jean! "αυτός σταμάτησε να παίξει" translates to "he stopped (doing what he was doing in order) to play". Even better, "αυτός σταμάτησε για να παίξει", "για να" meaning "in order to". "Αυτός σταμάτησε να παίζει" literally translates to "He stopped playing" (simple past). A better translation for "He has stopped playing" would have been "Αυτός έχει σταματήσει να παίζει" (present perfect). I hope I helped!
