Greek - Diphthongs
I have been living in Greece now for a while and at last I can learn Greek thanks to Duolingo!! :D
Is it just me or in the Diphthongs sections there should also be ou which is read "u" (oo - as in moo, etc.). For example Igoumenitsa, Papadopoulos, etc.
Thanks in advance for any clarifications.
I do not think that qualifies as a diphthong, it is just a digraph (written form using two letters) for a monophthong (single-vowel sound).
"Officially" it is taught as a diphthong. But you are right. In Ancient Greek most likely υ was spelled as u, but as the centuries passed υ became similar with others [i], so there was not other way to spell it. But be careful: For the English speaking ou is not ου, as for instance some TTSs do, as the simple Windows one.
