Duolingo is very useful

So, I have been using it to learn Swedish for almost a year. I completed the tree several months ago but continued to practice almost every day. I also read texts, news, watched videos on YouTube to improve and/or keep on level my knowledge.

By the time I moved to Sweden to do my PhD. I applied for SFI (Swedish For Immigrants) to learn Swedish. Today was my first course (C3C level) and I understood around 90% of the things. I could understand what are the teachers asking or talking about and I could solve most of the exercises that they gave. So I should say I was pretty surprised how much the self teaching by Duolingo helped me to pick up the basics of the language. I put a lot of effort in the learning in the beginning. I made notes of every lessons, wrote down all the rules, all the sentences, words, ett/en, singular, plural, definitive, indefinitive forms. After I finished the language tree I just kept practicing. My only problem is that I don't feel my pronunciation very good so I do not speak the language. But that's why I went to SFI, to be able to talk as well.

For those who are planning to use Duolingo to build some basic knowledge before moving to Sweden or staying there for longer time and want to communicate, I really recommend to use Duolingo every day. And in the beginning it is recommended to do 50+ XP, I think. Not to move up quickly, that 50 XP can be earned by doing the same lesson over and over to understand and memorize everything.

Cheers, David

Thanks for sharing your experience, David. Lots of good advice. Obviously the way you have used Duolingo has proven very effective. I suspect that with your attitude it won't be long before you'll be speaking Swedish with ease. Have fun.

Legalább találtál hozzá jól passzoló profilképet. :) (Amúgy magyar vagyok; a nickneved alapján gondolom te is. :) )

Igen, valóban, én is magyar vagyok. :) Akkor jól körbemagyaráztam neked angolul. (Svédül még nem megy... :))

Thanks for the suggestion Biceee. I just started using Duolingo a few months ago so it's quite useful to tell me to go with insane mode. Good luck with your learning
