Words Strength doesn't change
I checked my words that are supposed to be weak and it doesn't matter how many times I practice them again they just remain at the overdue state, is there anyway to fix that?
By the way it also says I haven't practiced them for a year.
I've got this problem...
I've been doing German on and off for 3 years, I just finished a 1 year hiatus.
So, the weakest words have "3 years"... now, before my haitus, I refreshed the whole tree to golden. And in the past few days, I've done most of these words 5-10 times each, as I've done around 600 points worth of refreshing in the past few days.
These words are very basic, entry level stuffs, I'm level 15 in German for reference.
Here's some on my list, and I can guarantee that I did most all of them around 1 year ago as well, and probably every few months before that hiatus going back the full 3 years. 1 year is about the most I've ever gone, certainly not three.
alle Tier mogt geht Mutter Tochter Apfel Fisch Tisch laufen Stuhl bringen Orangensaft Mittagessen
There's probably over 100 of them. Edit, I should mention that I've tried both "redoing" courses and using the "Practice" method... I think opening up each word individually and using the flash card works, at least it did last year when I first noticed this problem.... starting to remember why I took that hiatus.
Edit, nope... I just went back to the skill Apfel is found in "Accusative case" (oddly)... and I redid that lesson, lesson 2, twice over... The second time since all the other words were strong it fed me "Apfel" around 10x... And still "3 years" since I last practiced it.
Just thought I'd update this with another problem... new words not being added to my vocabulary list.
Flugzeug is one I just practiced, and it's not on my words list. AFAIK, it's one I've had in my vocab for over 1 year.
Add to that, Mama, Papa, and Bruder.
Yes, that's exactly my problem. Words are so basic like "vado: I go" "rosa: pink" "nuovi: new (p)" and so on... And yet I'm level 25 and have a fluency of 59%.
Yeah, I've been hitting the tree hard, pounding especially at those low-strength words, but they refuse to change.
I've got 621 out of 1513 words which are "dead" according to the Skill Strength Viewer script.
The thing seems to be doing some funny calculations, because "Family1" is "Golden" but has 32.8% strength.
I did it, it says my overall strength is 77.9% and dead words are 174/3264. Thank you. :)
OK, I figured something out...
After redoing Accusative Case, both the "Strengthen Skill" and redoing the individual lesson, around 10 times "Apfel" still said "Last Practiced: 3 years ago".
So I decided to do some basic troubleshooting. IE, try out a few variables to see if I got different results.
I loaded the lesson in the Android App, and the 1st try "Last updated: 1 minute ago"
So, if you have "stuck" vocabulary words, try the mobile app.... worked for me.
OK, yet another update...
The above method works... for some words.
I'd say the success rate averaged around 50%, and that's actually more like 75% of words <1 year, 25% of words >1 year.
Still, I'm down from 621 to 577 "dead" words.
I've got the same problem. Fisch, Apfel, Zucker, etc. I've done the lesson that is referenced when you click on the words repeatedly, both in Desktop and in the app. I've strengthened that skill, both on the website and in the app. Nothing shows them as having even been practiced. There are close to 200 of these dead words. I reported it as a bug, no change. It seems to be confined to earlier skills in the tree, possibly words I tested out of when I first started? I'm not sure of that, but looking at the words they are all things I know very well.
An update. It's supposedly been three years now since I practiced fisch. (Right.) But, one thing I noticed is that if you click the word to find out what lesson it is in, there is no "translation" in the box for words. Possibly a clue as to why they are not working.
Hmm, that's true with a large number of them... Same with fisch, oragensaft, gerate, numerous others.
But some like "kennen", "wasche", "laufen" do have definitions.
However, note an interesting correlation... the ones missing translations are all nouns. Holy hell, even "vater" and "mutter" don't have translations... wut?
Proper-nouns are likewise lacking definitions with these now 4 year last practiced words. Pronouns like "ihrer" do have definitions. How in blue blazes does a word like "her" go 4 years without practice despite being level 18 in German?
Hmm, Entshuldigung is apparently the only noun I have that has a definition... it's also the longest without a "practice" 5 years vs 4 for everything else.
Here's a weird one... Check out the "Details" page on "Orangensaft".
Here's a number of examples of some of the issues: https://imgur.com/a/OUKMJas
Some kind of database corruption?
The crazy thing is when I clicked on them I got either a blank pop up or, in desktop mode, blank for the definition in the box that is on the upper right of the page.
Now a new twist on this problem. It's showing I practiced a word "just now" and I know 100% it was not in the lesson I just finished.
It's a very old bug.
Just ignore it. The newer courses don't even have a "Words tab".
Have you re-done all of the lessons from the skill that won't strengthen?
The skill itself is fine. It's the words on the word list that show as weak and not practiced FOR A YEAR. And yes, I've redone every lesson in that skill, again and again. In both the app and the website. At this point, I know Food.
Both ways, even in lesson when I practise them they don't change. Like the words (gialla-vado-credo-etc..) those are used in almost every lesson in the tree how could they be overdue.
I don't think flashcards strengthen the words. I'm not sure, though - someone might correct me. There is a bug where occasionally you have to repeat a lesson, but that's quite rare. Usually just using the "strengthen" lesson for a skill does the job.
I did try to use the strengthening button on the home page and in the skill that has the weak words, whenever I practise those words they don't go stronger.
It's the one in the skill that will make the difference. Sometimes you have to use it more than once. How strong is the skill at the moment?
Orange? It sounds like the skill is gold. The reason you can't strengthen it is because it's at full strength already.
...and the reason certain specific words aren't being strengthened is because Duolingo's algorithms are prioritising other words.
I know it's frustrating - I like to be a completist too, but in that situation I tend to just carry on regardless, and wait for Duolingo to show me those words when it's good and ready.
All orange, I've been doing the one in the skill like 12 times now for verbs 1, still some verbs I practise isn't changed. I don't know if I can post a photo here to show that or not.
