Any French movies?

Hi Duo users! I'm looking to improve in French, and I want to be exposed to it a lot. Can anyone recommend some French movies, songs, tv shows, or anything else that I could use to improve my French on, because I'm having trouble finding them online, especially YouTube. Also I hope they are free. Thanks!

I watch quite a few programmes and films on TV5Monde channel on Sky (satellite TV), also available on cable via a number of providers in the UK. http://www.tv5.org/ has a good site with good amount of content, which you can watch on the web, and it may also be able to advise on providers in your country if you want to watch on TV (which has the advantage of being able to access French subtitles easily).

A large number of programmes and films have French subtitles (marked on planner and TV5Monde web site), and I find that really helps - it possible to understand the whole programme, whereas without them I sometimes just get the gist. Also helps to marry the written and spoken word in my head, essential for a non-phonetic language such as French.

You can probably pick up a copy of Amelie at your local library if you can't find it free online.

It's actually a very good movie and I would recommend it to anyone whether they're interested in learning French or not.

Sorry, didn't know this was an issue.

I don't remember anything terribly wrong with it. There was some sex talk, a few "naughty" scenes (nothing involving any real level of nudity from what I remember), and I believe the occasional swear word. If I had a kid (shudder) and they were 12-13 and wanted to see it, I'd let them. I'm not a parent though, and I haven't seen it in years, so maybe I'm forgetting some things.

http://www.arte.tv/fr Enjoy!

Also, read this: http://www.gutenberg.org/cache/epub/4650/pg4650.html - there is some sort of effort in the Immersion section to translate the whole thing if you find it tough.

The first French movie I ever watched was "La Cité Des Enfants Perdus." Par réalisateur/director: Jean-Pierre Jeunet. He also directed "Amélie" (which I also highly recommend), "Delicatessen", "Un Long Dimanche de Fiançailles." His films are usually some what surreal, dream-like and visually creative. They are full of whimsical, serendipitous and child-like humour even though some of the subject matter can be quite dark (e.g., child abduction, dystopian future). "Le cuisinier, le voleur, sa femme et son amant" -- Another highly rated (90/89% on rottentomatoes) and visually stunning film.

But I would perhaps ask what you're interested in? Horror, drama, comedy, sci-fi, romance, etc.? Look for something that would capture your interest regardless of language. Then look for movies, songs, novels, etc. of that genre in your desired language.

Can't find youtube videos? Try this: Narrow your desired topic or genre and type it into the youtube search box but type it in your desired language. For example, I have always had an interest in the pyramids. I type "Les pryamides" in the search box. Et Voilà! Additionally look for the CC (Close Caption) icon at the bottom of the video (not all videos have this feature). It will then give you subtitles and you can then read in French along with the French dialogue.

I don't know much about French stuff, but I used to watch a cartoon called Wakfu. It was made in a French studio. Good luck.

I don't know many good French series but I would recommend 'Fais pas ci, fais pas ça'. Not all the seasons are of equal quality, but at its best it's hilarious and quite subtle. It's a family comedy with a bit of social satire, and the actors are great. I'm afraid though many references or language subtleties may be too obscure for a foreigner to appreciate what makes this series unique. Just keep it in store until you're ready, I still think it's a must watch. Good luck !

For songs, I've tried to compile a list in this post

For movies, I liked :

  1. Le dîner de cons;
  2. Taxi and the 3 following it;
  3. Les 400 coups;
  4. Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain.

And I just read further down that you're looking for movies accessible to kids, so here are another bunch of suggestions that may interest you better :

  1. Arthur et les Minimoys;
  2. La légende se Sarila;
  3. Les triplettes de Belleville - almost no dialogue though;
  4. Le petit Nicolas;
  5. The French version of The Adventures of Tintin, which I've heard is maybe better than the original;
  6. Les choristes.

You could also look for any film of the Contes pour tous series. Here's the list. I haven't seen them all, but I particularly liked La guerre des tuques, Bach et Botine and Tirelire Combines & Cie.

La Haine: 3 young guys from the ghetto goes to Paris and have short adventures there, quite nice movie (black and white but recent and good)

Brice de Nice: A comedy movie with the main character of The Artist (Jean DuJardin)

La belle verte: A futuristic movie where some people go to Paris around the year 2000. (based of German philosophies)

There are also cool (comedy) Youtubers as 10 minutes à perdre, studio bagel, palmashow, suricate.. Cyprien and Norman. Watch also the videos of "Les inconnus". All those videos are free and Suricate and studio bagel's one have english subtitles if needed.
