Con dao? I thought con is only for animate objects

Someone else replied in another question saying that this is one of the irregular uses of "con". I guess we just have to accept it. However, my family and I say "cái dao" and we speak with a southern dialect. I'm guessing "con dao" is a Northerner thing?

Shouldn't it be "cái dao"?

I've never heard of "con dao" before so I think it's something the North Vietnamese say. I say "cái dao" and I would report that if I were you.
