When I practice duolingo sometimes they say one of them is love and the other is like but they mix them up all the time. So what's the real difference?

любить is to love and нравиться is like.

Only when you talk about people. With inanimate objects, "любить" is to "like": Я люблю кофе - I like coffee.

The Poles use a word resembling "любить" in the meaning of "to like" and have quite another word for "to love", it puzzles me all the time.

They are used interchangeably, however, please be aware that both have different case endings for the noun following the verb.

мие нравится - I like ... ( noun following is in the nominative case usually)

я люблю - I like / love ... (noun following the verb is in the accusative case)

Examples -

мие нравится водка

я люблю водку
