Is the speech recognition working at all?
I was told by Duolingo to say all kinds of stuff in German, and I have a German girlfriend who tells me I'm doing it right, but I still was a bit suspicious of the speed with which Duolingo recognizes my speech, because I know speech recognition is very hard for a computer, much the same way that OCR is hard for a computer.
So I tried just basically saying only one syllable instead of what I was suppose to say, which was "Der Mann lernt", and Duolingo said I did it right.
Don't get me wrong I LOVE Duolingo, but if the speech recognition allows ANYTHING as the right thing, then I'm not learning pronunciation at all.
I might just not have set it up right, please tell me if this is my mistake.
Well, just now I clicked the record button to record "Ich trinke Wasser" and before I could speak, my boyfriend shouted "Mamma, ek wil nuwe sokkies koop!" (Mum, I want to buy new socks), which was then recorded. According to Duolingo, it was correct, so I don't think it's your mistake.
Even if the speech recognition isn't working properly, it still allows you to play back your own voice and compare it to the native pronunciation. That's something, I guess.
