"Tôi nghe thấy cô ấy nói cảm ơn"

What does the "thấy" do to this sentence? It is accepted as correct with and without it, so I don't understand the difference.

What does thấy mean???

I said "nghe thấy" to make Duo happy but "thấy" is not needed, it only confuses beginners. Some Vietnamese even consider it's incorrect to say "nghe thấy" in this context.

I thought the correct use of thấy was in emphasis as in "already" - I already hear or heard her say thank you. VERY confusing, if anyone from Duolingo is paying attention to these comments.
