Although - perhaps this is the point of James' question - in English you'd rarely say 'The volcanoes are five'. In English, you'd say 'There are five volcanoes,' but that option is marked as wrong.

No, it is not wrong it is now in the incubator. Sorry, it was a slip up.

That should definitely be an accepted answer, probably the only accepted answer, but my original question was the one answered by Jaye above, whether this is the way one should usually form this sentence in Greek.

Is this the typical way to say there are a certain number of something?

This would sound more usual: "Υπάρχουν πέντε ηφαίστεια." but both are correct.

Υπάρχουν πέντε ηφαίστεια

That's frustrating. 'There are five volcanos' marked as incorrect

Sorry we had a glitch which has been corrected.

"there are are five volcanos." still marked wrong. The English dictionaries I consulted say it can be spelled with or without the "e" and your prompts give me the version without the "e" as the first choice.

"There are five volcanos." is definitely one of the correct translations and has been since my last comment 9 months ago.

However, I now taking a better look at what you posted as you answer and assuming it is the same as what you wrote in the exercise you have: ""there are are five volcanos." with "are are". It's a common mistake to write the same word twice and to overlook it when checking our answers.

Next time make a Report if you don't know why your answer was rejected. Just go to the bottom of the exercise page to Report and check "My answer should be accepted." Then make a comment here. That way we can get a clear view of your answer.
