"A focistáknak sok pénzük van, és sok barátjuk is."

Translation:The football players have a lot of money, and many friends too.

"much money" reads oddly. We say "how much money?" for a question but "a lot of money" or "lots of money" in situations like this.

Could this be a statement about football players in general (and so have no definite article in the English translation)?

Sure, could be.

The translations for "sok" should be more consistent, translations vary in examples from "much", "many", "a lot". I think in all cases all should be accepted.

It is not that simple. You cannot say "many money" and "much friends". "Many" is countable, "much" is not. Yet, "sok" stands for both.

Yes that is a fair point, in some cases at least two are appropriate though. In the above example "a lot of" would be an acceptable english translation for both instances of "sok".
