West Flemish course on Memrise (with audio!)
Lêert e kjê e bitje West-Vlams!
Hi all! I started working on a West Flemish course for English speakers on Memrise, with awesome audio done by my lovely sister (because her voice is so much clearer than mine :S)!
I think this language is especially interesting for anyone who:
- is learning/is interested in Dutch and Frisian
- who likes a rather different accent
- who would like to help save this vulnerable language
So, here it is:
Closely linked to Dutch and English, West Flemish is the regional language of West Flanders, a Belgian province, and spoken by over a million people in West Flanders (BE), Zeelandic Flanders (NL) and French Flanders (FR). Whether you're going to Bruges, Ypres or the Belgian seaside, you'll now understand this rather peculiar (and vulnerable) language and you'll be able to impress the locals with your knowledge!
Also remember that we just started working on it, so I know the content is quite limited, but constructive criticism is always welcome!
West Flemish Portal :)
(Coming soon. Maybe. Most likely when I'm back from Romania!)
Ah, finally! Merci David :D (Is it true that thank you is merci in west flemish?)
Indeed! Merci is the most commonly used word for thanks. As an alternative you can also use ge zy bedankt (lit. You are thanked.). :)
Merci is also the most commonly used word in the region of Germany around Aachen, Duren and Jülich near the Dutch border
