this was very confusing. The drop down said writers, as in people, and I couldn't really figure how the black pencils figured in...I put "I don't ever like black pencil writers," which sounds odd, but isn't that the literal translation? I don't know where the writers went to in this sentence!

An unnatural sounding sentence in English. We might say "I've never liked black pencils" or simply "I don't like black pencils".

I think the logical translation will be: I never liked black pencils, but marked wrong.
