What is en skogkatt

In the Places skill is the word skogkatt which I could not find in my dictionary but doing the lesson it seems to mean a forest cat.

Now I know a skog means a forest and a katt means a cat but what IS a forest cat? One sentence where it was used is "The boy has a forest cat" (as close as I can remember).

Is it like Brown Cheese? An amalgam of two formal words which has been popularised or does it just mean a cat that lives in the forest?

Isn't there an urban myth that you can find out anything on the Internet? Well, a skogkatt must be a mythical creature because it seems not to exist in cyberspace....

It can't be a 'wild cat' (Felis sylvestris sylvestris) because Scandinavia is outside their range. It can't be a lynx, because that is 'en gaupe'. Perhaps just a feral cat? Unless it's what the Vikings called wild cats when they encountered them in Scotland?

Edit: just read the link rumnraisin posted.

Well, I Googled it and the Internet knew it was a type of domestic cat so it can't be a mythical creature.

Google works it mysterious ways. Google returned me paaaaaaages of wild cats. No skogkatts. Or domestic cats of any kind. So I opened wild cat results and found the Linnaean above. Which misled me into thinking 'skogkatt' must refer to wild cats even though they're absent from Scandinavia, since Felis sylvestris would translate to Katt av skogene, or similar.

I hope this isn't anything to do with Google's reputed ability to only return results it thinks the user searching is looking for.

Native here. A skogkatt is (at least as far as I know) simply a race. Hence, forestcat is what we call the most common race of cats in Norway, the most common to keep as a domestic cat. It likes to go outside a lot, even in the winter.

  • "Hvilken rase er katten din?" - "Vanlig, Norsk skogkatt".

I hope this answers your question :)

A NORSK SKOGKATT is a very specific Norwegian cat breed. If it is a real Norsk Skogkatt then it has a pedigree.

The kind of cat that you are thinking of larskie, is called a "HUSKATT" = a general cat of mixed breed, a type of cat that "everyone" that has a cat has.

Greetings from another Norwegian.
