why not 'makes' food? Does μαγειρεύει imply using heat?

It seems that μαγειρεύει is derived from μαγικός /mighty, capable of preparing things/, which would imply that any type of preparing food should be incorporated in its meaning.

"meal" is countable in English in the sense "a serving of food", so it would have to be "a meal" -- but that would be a better translation for γεύμα than for φαγητό, I think.

("meal" is uncountable in the sense "ground-up food, similar to flour" but that is not a translation for φαγητό.)
