english with german subtitles or german with english subtitles?

Hi! I'm fluent in english and understand 99% of what is said in movies/tv series even with local accents. I've been learning german since I was 10 years old and know many german words and how to pronounce them. I can form sentences but I'd like to do it faster with less thinking involved. Have you tried watching german tv series with english subtitles? Do you think it would be more helpful than watching english tv series with german subtitles? There are more of these and they are more diverse. Can you reccomend some german movies/shows that have subtitles?

You could try both, and see what feels like being the most useful. And, how about German series with German subtitles (for those hard of hearing)? That might be the most efficient way.

I would find a friend or friends dad/mom that can speak in german and have a conversation with them (in german)

TV definetly helps a lot. Or also Radio.

If you have Netflix, there's a lot available in German on there.

I'm pretty sure german with english subtitles will be better than english with german subtitles. If you can, though, try german with german subtitles. If you have netflix, lots of Netflix Originals have german dubs and subs, try Stranger Things, BoJack Horseman!

Also, bs.to has lots of shows with german audio

Yes, exactly. First German with English subtitles, then when that's comfortable or easy try German with German subtitles. When the English subtitles are distracting because your brain wants to stay in German, or because you understand the German construct was actually quite different than the English translation, that's time to switch to German subtitles.

You're trying to get your brain thinking in German. Listening to English and reading German will not do that for you.

German with German subtitles should be most effective :-)

Commissario Brunetti is a really good German detective show set in Venice, Italy. Watch it with English subtitles.

German without any subtitles! I find the subs really annoying as they tend not to be the same as what is being said. I'd recommend (if you can) watching a favourite series dubbed to German. You know the plot so don't have to stress about not understanding everything you hear, and can let the language wash over you without any distractions.

You could take a look at this extension we made for studying languages with Netflix:
