I had the same problem at first, but I found that breaking the words into syllables really helps determine what set of letters produce certain sounds. Take "mężczyzna" for example. Break it down into: Męż - czyz - na. The Męż and na aren't too difficult if you listen to how the word is spoken, it's the czyz that throws people off, because most languages don't really use that combination of letters. The czyz kind of sounds like "jezz". Now, if you take another word that has the same group of letters like dziewczynka and break it down into dziew - czy - n - ka, you'll see that the czy combination has been used again, producing a sound like "jeh" (because there's no z after the y), so you can conclude that, so far, czy produces a "jeh" sound. It might take a while to get used to because it feels like there should be a vowel in there somewhere :P Plus, the letters are used in way that is different to English and other romance languages, so it's hard to instinctively read those letters and produce a different sound. It just takes some adjusting, but pay attention to stuff like that and you'll get there in no time :)

Just keep on practicing and practicing. Try making sentences on your own with the new words that you have learned so you won't forget those easily. I also review all the words that I have learned every now and then. Learning Polish is indeed challenging but as long as the dedication is there, you can make it. :)
