I want to be able to read Marcel Proust's À la recherche du temps perdu one day. I was suppose to try it last summer but I chickened out. :)

I admire your ambition! As a french person it is even a tough read for me... it's oh-so-beautiful and perfectly written though :)

Anyway, I'm giving you 3 lingots to help you!

I wanted to because of my family history. My Grandma's side of the family is French-Canadian and she speaks French. Also, my family goes to Montreal quite often and I'd like to read some signs in French :)

I am learning French for a few reasons. For one it is good for the brain to learn languages. I also find learning generally fun. My partner's parents have moved to France and I want to be able to talk to restaurant employees there about my lactose intolerance when we visit. I also did French in school up to GCSE level and, though I got an A, I have since forgotten most of it. I would like to build up that part of my identity again, achieve something that is difficult and not let all that I have learnt fade this time.

I did French as GCSE many moons ago and since have forgotten. So it is good to relearn it all over again - step by step.

I thought I should learn a language to avoid Alzheimer's. I think French is a beautiful language. It always bothered me that I never understood French even though I spent years in school struggling with it.

Besides, a good spy knows many languages.

I have a practical reason. I moved to Ottawa, and a lot of people speak French here. I really liked Duolingo and started to repeat other languages too.

I wanted to learn French again. I did it as a GCSE at school many years ago but since have forgotten most of it, however I know bits of it so it is 'conversable' when I go to French speaking countries.

I love the sound of the language, personally!! :D

Originally, I loved the French language and found it to romantic, wanted to go to France of course. After years of learning French, learning more about France as a country, and visiting France, etc, the romanticization of France and French has died down a bit but for me it's a challenge to become fluent at it. Also, I love Canada and would love to be able to speak both their main languages there.

Took French at CSE level in the UK decades ago, lol loved the sound of the language but never went further with it and so lost it over the years. Today i live in Ontario Canada and love to visit Montreal, Ottawa and Quebec City, they have such a vibrant culture. I love learning but have little time for school and a crazy personal schedule, Duolingo is perfect choice for me (sounds like an ad sorry!). BTW i love the way French music sounds and often listen to Canadian French language stations (CBC) on the radio. I think if you love the language it really helps.

I'm Canadian and in college for the field of childcare, and I had already learned basic French from grades 4-10 (the memory of having to stand in front of the class and recite the Être and Avoir conjugations will forever be etched into my mind, lol) so I figured why not? Plus, every label in Canada is in both English and French, so there's learning opportunities everywhere.
