How to delete a language from your profile
If you want to remove a language course on Duolingo or reset your progress, there's a way!
Note: you must always have one course. You cannot remove a course if it is the only course you are learning.
Go to your settings page
Go to your "Language" page by selecting Learning Language from the menu on the right of the screen.
Click Reset or remove languages under the big blue "See all language courses" button.
Select "Reset Progress" (blue button) if you want to start the tree from the beginning. Select "Remove" (that's the big red button) if you want to remove the tree and any traces of it, such as the small flag next to your name or on your profile.
Please be aware that removing or resetting a course cannot be undone.
If you remove a language, you can always add it back later, but all your progress will be lost and you'll have to start the tree from the beginning.
Check out the Duolingo Help Center for more great tips about using Duolingo.
We need a way to delete courses from different target languages if we already have other courses from other target languages. For example we should be allowed to delete all but one course across all of Duolingo not all but one course per target language. As it is right now it is quite messy.
I want to remove German from Spanish, but I can't. It is the last language in my Spanish profile. I am using the English profile. I wonder why Duo separates the profiles.
I want to remove Spanish and German from my list but it doesn't work. When I tried the Reset or remove languages button link above, I was taken to an error page.
Same thing happens to me. Maybe its a bug? We should try telling duolingo about it
same happens to me, there is no button maybe is a error from Duolingo's page?
For some reason, English is listed on my profile, even though I am a native speaker and I never signed up for the course. When I go into the profile settings, it does not appear on the list of languages and there is no way to remove it. Very confused...anyone else have this experience?
It happens when you learn English from another language. It's unfortunately impossible to remove.
I got stuck with it when I took the reverse Greek course. The problem is you must have at least one course from your chosen language.
I tried to delete French (from Italian) but it didn't work. I added another course from Italian (English) so I would be able to delete that one. But it's still there!!! Why??? It's not on the drop down menu anymore or showing up in these icons by my name, but it is still on my profile.... WHY???? Also, the English from Italian isn't showing up. :(
I just leave my message here but... what use are the Lingots these days when you can not buy a quiz or test anymore ?? It was a good way of practise, it is a shame.
If a language is reset, will purchased topics (Idioms, etc.) still be there? Reset, obviously, but you wouldn't have to buy them again, right?
How can I delete the last item from this list? In that case the remove button is disabled. This can be useful if I accidentally started a course from a wrong language.
same problem. i've accidentally added english for speakers of russian, but i'm learning russian for speakers of english (i'm learning everything here for speakers of english; not russian)
Similar problem here. I let a Spanish speaking friend try out the English course for Spanish speakers using my account. Now I can't get it off. I have other languages on my account, but it looks like this one is counted separately since the others are for English speakers and this one isn't.
Well, I did English for French speakers, for practice, and I got it off.
Like mentioned, you cannot delete the last language from the list. One way to delete the 'last language' is by adding another language to the list and then deleting the language to be deleted. :)
Ok and What do I do if I don't have any remove button?? I have six courses and I want to get rid of it.... Bug, bug everywhere :(((
This has been copied from the Help Center - why?
If the duolingo team does not trust its users to find the Help Center, it would make much more sense to make that easier accessible (as it is, the link constantly disappears when more threads are being loaded in the forum view) rather than making redundant posts about individual questions, posts that nobody who cannot even find the "Help" link will be able to find again a week from now.
If a user did this, I would delete the post and ask them on their stream not to copy and paste "readily" available material from elsewhere on the site.
Will we have 61 sticky discussions in TBS forum: one for each Support Pages' article?
that's way too many languages dude, focus on one thing & don't get distracted
Information on on how to do something that is currently impossible is not readily available on the site.
Adding them to the forum might make sense if they added an automatic (and more advanced) search feature to the post discussion feature.
Without that it becomes something else users ignore in their rush to post.
WHY ARE YOU LEARNING NORWEGIAN? ONE OF THE WORST LANGUAGES? HMMMMMMM????????????
Never mind, you are better in Swedish. You are good everything, is fine, you can go and play Roblox now.
holy ❤❤❤❤ that list of languages is impressive especially considering you have really high levels in some of them
Exactly. Why have they copied this from the help center????? It's just silly. You don't need to have this in 2 places.
Can someone post a link to the help centre?
HelpfulDuo already shared it in their original message in this discussion (last line).
I've never seen it!?
You can also access it, when under the English interface(*), by hovering over your username (in the blue barmenu) then clicking on "Help".
(*) English interface = when you're currently working on a course for English native speakers.
I didn't even know there was a help centre. Can someone post the link to it here?
Wow, you had the time to click on it and write a negative comment. A person who just haves time to be mean.
I still have not been able to remove a language course. Can you make tis easier to do? Thank you!
I still have not been able to remove a language course.
Which one? Spanish for English speakers or Swedish for English speakers?
Btw. I was unable to remove a language under android. I was only able to remove it one a computer.
I'm somehow in a language course I never joined, and now I can't remove it. The "remove" button is disabled and when I click "Reset progress", the page refreshes and the course is still there.
How do I get rid of it? The course is English for Chinese speakers btw.
I know the English icon isn't appearing here, but when I switch between language courses on my laptop, the English course is still there.
Or you can just (reset then) let this other course be and work on the one you came on Duolingo for.
I did it but it still appear like I am still interested in it (I am not because don't know japanese. I just wanted to see how the site looks like in other languages)
I did it
You mean "reseting it"? Then now do the second part: let this "English from Japanese" course be (in your list of studied language on your profile) and concentrate on your real course.
I'd love to delete 'English' and 'Catalan' that I can see in my profile. But unfortunately it's impossible.
Your are following "English" course from what other language?
If it's for Spanish speakers, like Catalan, then you can delete one of the two (if you've not started any other course for Spanish speakers).
If it's not for Spanish speakers and that you haven't started any other course from this same source language (from which you've started english), then you'll not be able to delete the English course.
Beside the fact that it's been copied from the help centre, I like this info.
Hola. Blanki.
It's been a month since this was stickied and I regularly see people asking this question in the forums. Every day.
I really hope a required automatic search before posting function is coming soon.
These directions don't apply to the app. How do I delete a language from the app on my tablet (Kindle Fire)?
Upon removing and then adding, or resetting the course, does the person have the ability to gain lingot by completing another lesson or do they not?
I noticed on rspreng's post you asked for some lingots. I looked for a place to give you some and found the option here. So, here you go. :)
Oh man, I just now saw this. Thank you very much Tabatha36! I really do appreciate it. :)
How to change the web site's language ? please answer .. My english is not good. I dont understand most things.
You need to switch to a course teaching (any language) FROM the language you want the interface into.
- If you want the interface in French, you need to switch to a course teaching a language to French speakers.
- If you want the interface in German, you need to switch to a course teaching a language to German speakers.
- If you want the interface in Arabic, you need to switch to a course teaching a language to Arabic speakers.
See here various methods to switch course.
So I got interested in a few languages not for English speakers, I can't delete them because it says that they're the only languages courses I do. Can you fix this at some point please?
I study Spanish, Dutch and Japanese which I want to keep doing but I also checked out the English for Chinese speakers. I didn't like it so I haven't done much on that course. How can I delete that one? I see it in the drop down and on my profile on desktop. On mobile, I cannot see it. When I try to go through the same process mentioned here, the red buttons are greyed out as if it was the only language I'm learning and I cannot delete it. Any idea how to do this?
How can I delete that one?
Please see previous answer to the same question: the answer to Tnerenbears's similar question.
You can't as it is the only language you're learning from the Chinese interface
(in your case, from the Chinese interface).
as if it was the only language I'm learning
It is the only one you're learning from the Chinese interface.
Each interfaces you activated must always have at least one course.
In your case, you activated the Chinese interface by starting courses fro English speakers and the English interface by starting courses fro English speakers.
Your account must therefore have at least one course for Chinese speakers and one for English speakers.
No, you can't delete any interface you activated.
If there were a way then there would be a way to delete the last/only course from a given interface...
So will this English course seen in my profile be here forever now even though I want it removed?
can i change the course english-spanish spanish- english, Without affecting what I have registered in my courses? my lessons?
All well and good if you access DL via a computer. If, like me, you use your Android phone to study then there's no way of deleting those extra languages that have been added. Think I'll stick with Memrise. It's cheaper, a better UI, and is far more in depth.
if you are trying to get rid of a course, then I recommend to read that sticky that helpfulduo posted:)
thanks so much i couldn't figure that out. this is a big help. here have a lingot. :)
I deleted all my courses except Japanese and it did not refresh. I also can't delete my Polish -> English course because it's treated as the last one – and yes, it's the last one for "from Polish", but is not for my account. What can I do with this?
I deleted all my courses except Japanese and it did not refresh.
According to your account, you are now only following Japanese (among non-English languages). So it seems to have worked.
and yes, it's the last one for "from Polish", but is not for my account. What can I do with this?
On that, nothing you can do (to delete it) as it's the last one in the Polish interface and since it's what matters when it comes to be able to delete a course or not. It's like that, nothing we(=us users) can do about it.
But you can reset the course to 0. Like that it'll not appear next o your username in the forums. There is nothing more you can do.
Probably because you "switched" once to a course teaching Spanish. Not necessarily taking any lesson in said course, but just switched once to that course. You can remove it from the list in your settings if it being listed bothers you.
Thanks for the info. I have the same issue as many people on this thread, I can't delete "English for French speakers" from my profile. I hope in the future we will have the ability to remove an interface altogether. At least the little English flag doesn't appear next to my name (or does it?).
Help! I can't make any threads here on troubleshooting! When I write a new post and click to submit it, I get error 404 :,-( Doesn't seem to happen when commenting on existing threads, only creating new ones.
Anyway, what I wanted to make a thread about is:
Whenever I go to a certain sentence's comment section and write something, the comment never shows up. I don't know if my account is glitched or that's somehow normal behavior (such as moderators having to approve every comment before it can be shown). Can anyone confirm they see/don't see the comments they make?
I'm using Android 6.0. Haven't tested if this behavior happens on browser.
Anyway, what I wanted to make a thread about is:
Whenever I go to a certain sentence's comment sec [...]

I can't make any threads here on troubleshooting!
Yes you can, and did (see. above).
When I write a new post and click to submit it, I get error 404 :,-(
When this is happening:
- go back to the Troubleshooting forum (by clicking on a link to there, not by "going back" using the "previous page" button of your browser)
- go to the "New" tab.
You'll see your discussion there.
If you don't, wait 2-3 minutes then (while still ont the "New" tab of the Troubleshooting forum, hit the "refresh" button of your browser to reload this specific tab of this specific forum and it'll be there.
I'm learning three courses in two different languages: Spanish and English. I want to delete the only course I'm learning in Spanish, but according to the website it can't be done. What can I do?
wow this is super helpful thanks a lot! may the force be with you all.. makes a awesome jedi exit
I guess the same way: using the iPad's web browser to access Duolingo's website.
Ok, everyone who is having problems, I have the fix! Make sure you are on the full desktop site. If you are on mobile you can do this in your browser from the menu in Chrome, for Android. I'm sure there's a similar option for iOS/Safari. Hope that helps! Go to your settings from the full site and you can see the options to remove the language like the guide above shows.
For anyone else confused as I was initially, this refers to the Settings page here on the website, not on the phone app.
I did this, but they still appear when I put my mouse on the flag indicating the language I am learning... I don't know how to delete it completly!
I have the same issue as many users: I can't delete the only language I was learning from Spanish even though I'm signed up to a bunch of others from English. I have emailed DL weeks ago, no reply. Has anyone any news or tip about that very annoying design flaw?
I have emailed DL weeks ago, no reply.
Emailing is not the way to share something with staff (receiving emails from millions of users from the whole world is not scalable). So nothing surprising in not having answers to an email contact.
The way to report is not email but filling this form. To which, as explained in the form, Duo doesn't answer, but they read it which is what matters in order to improve Duo.
very annoying design flaw?
How is it "very annoying" when the fact that this course from Spanish will appear nowhere(°) as associated to your account, as soon as you reset your progress for that course?
(°) except maybe on your profile page. But how would it be "very" annoying?
Log in on browser next to your username is the flag for the language you are learning, click that and you will ;have the option to delete or add or reset a course
put your cursor on your profile picture in the upper right corner. You will see the options called Your Profile, Settings, Help, Keyboard shortcuts and Logout. Click on settings.
PLEASE HELP ME, MY FRIEND HAS ADDED A COURSE I WANT TO GET RID OFF WITHOUT HAVING TO RESET MY WHOLE SKILLS TREE, THANK YOU GOODAY GO PLAY ROBLOX.
I dont have any option you are saying above! I have checked it in the browser also in the app . Setting does not show any language options
You have to log in on browser then next to your username is a picture of the flag for the language you are learning click that and it will give you the options
These features appear to be disabled in both the app and the mobile version of the website. The 'settings' page included 6 options, none of which were 'Learning Language'. The 'Learning Language' page has 2 options, neither of which are 'Reset or remove languages'. Thank you to whomever wrote this tutorial for including hyperlinks. You have really made it easy to navigate the uselessly 'streamlined' version of a mobile website.
But after clicking the remove button, all the buttons turn gray and the only thing I can do then is click cancel. What am I doing wrong?
Hi, if anyone sees this, I need some help here - for some reason, it has French on my profile, And I've never touched a french button and I'm not sure why it's there. I'm only learning Esperanto. I followed these instructions and all it will do is grey everything out and nothing gets deleted. Help- what should I do? THank you so mcuuchhhh!(lol) -user
I followed this advice and duolingo will not allow me to remove a language...
I can't delete my German course. It just makes the reset button gray, and when I go to my home all of my progress is still saved.
Are these steps can only be done using desktop or app? Because I've tried a web version and Android app but there's no option to remove a language.
Yeah. You just delete your languages in settings. Note: you must have at least 1 course
i need to delete the french thingy, -to american, then, i need to delete american, (English,) on-all the other languages!
everything, is in FRENCH! i can't understand it! (tho, it helps w/ my french grammer, and stuff, but like, its harder on here, than at school)
the english thingy is gone. but it's STILLL french!!!!!!???????? HUH!!!!!!!!!!??? WUT????????!!!!!!!!
The comment on the top where a moderator said
>If a user did this, I would delete the post and ask them on their stream not to copy and paste "readily" available material from elsewhere on the site.
shows how power abusive all moderators are.
oh my god my problems finally solved!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dear HelpfulDuo can you please sticky
https://www.duolingo.com/comment/20501722 thread so that it is findable for those wanting more detailed instructions on how to join or start a club? And, you can delete this comment afterwards as I do not wish to be off-topic in your thread. Thanks! And yes, I did get attacked by at least 5 trolls who downvoted my thread such that when I do a search for it here, I can't even find it! . Thanks! :D
You go to your profile and go to settings and find what you want to delete. Is that helpful?
What should I do if I want to remove a couple of lessons? There is a way to do that?
How can I remove an interface? I do not want to learn anything from German to example but Duolingo forces me to, why?
That's weird, I accidentally removed my spanish just yesterday, but I put it back right away, I didn't lose any exp. Huh?
I don't think you lose EXP, you just lose your progress on the tree. So none of your skills will be practiced, and only basics 1 is unlocked, but you still have however much EXP you got from that tree before. I am not 100% sure, though, because I have never reset a tree.
I can not see my activity or leave a comment on another activity persons , why ?
i agree this is a copy people copy to get veiws and likes. But this man is just copying for something like for fun or to make people think that he is cool because he knows all this stuff
How do you now delete the heart health meter??? That I need to know. Really discouraging way to learn.
One can't "delete" a feature from a new version of a program. You can try to install back an older version of the app (however, I don't know where you can find older versions): if you install an old enough version you'll not have this new feature/interface but you'll also not have many other new things.
Duolingo is switching little by little all its users to this new "system" (=the "health" one) that Duo tests evaluated as better (according to their criteria).
Why cant I learn Ancient Mayan?
Nothing prohibits you to find (on the internet or ij a school) a course of "ancient Maya".
But you'll probably first have to decide which one (of the ancient Maya languages) you want to learn:
On Duolingo, it's likely it'll be one day available but.. when? Maybe in several months, several years or several dozen of years...
Many courses are "wanted" and not only for English speakers. And Duo unfortunately can't support and help at the same time too much teams of volunteers, hence they can't add at once all the courses they'd like to add in the incubator.
If you'd like to suggest a course, see this short guide about “How to suggest a course”.
I don't know why you can't. Isn't it where you can start a different language?
I have a question, is there going there going to be a Japeness language update?
