Today I learned that I rock at picking up romance languages but that German is just not my bag. Its funny considering my native language is English.

Sorry German you're just not gonna happen.

German's generally acknowledged to be a bit harder than romance languages for English speakers. See the FSI rankings here: http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Wikibooks:Language_Learning_Difficulty_for_English_Speakers

XD Which one did you choose? (Japanese?) I've got Korean on my list (and am actively trying to figure it out)... apparently it's also Class III. I'm hoping the SOV structure will be easier to understand for me, though, since Romanian uses SOV instead of SVO every once in a while.

Best of luck! I've been studying Korean since last Sunday and basically just been focusing on being able to read at a better rate. I estimate about 10 hours of actual language learning... just 2190 to go! :D

@Usagiboy7

Sure! This one has the pronunciations also. http://www.learnkorean.com/lesson/lesson2.asp

http://www.learnkoreanlanguage.com/learn-korean-beginners.html <- Here Lesson 1 and 2 are most useful for learning Hangul—the letters, and the irregularities. It explains things more step-by-step than LearnKorean.

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/korean-letters/id495504095?mt=8 <- this is the application I was talking about. Immensely useful.

@aminowrimo,

Have you seen this info-graph http://www.ohmz.net/2012/04/30/learn-koreans-in-15-minutes-or-at-least-how-to-read-it/ on "how to read Korean in 15 minutes"? I assume the time frame is more than optimistic. ;) But, I really liked the info-graph. ^_^

@Usagiboy7

It's actually pretty accurate. :) It's a ridiculously simple, logical alphabet. The things that gave me trouble, actually, are the pronunciation irregularities (there are a few, though they're really good about having rules—it's just I'm not sure if a word is spelled 하겠니 or 하게니 (by the way I have no idea if those words actually exist. XD))

I'd seen it before, but it's very dense and so didn't work so well for me as other, slightly more complicated explanations. XD I have the entire alphabet with pronunciation on a whiteboard just outside the bathroom and I practice random words on it from songs I've heard.

To actually recognize the words and be able to read, I think it would take about an hour or so. There's also a fantastic app called Learn Korean Letters, I believe, in the iOS app store. Absolutely fantastic. :D

@aminowrimo,

The dry erase board is a great idea! :D Also, I don't see myself learning Korean any time soon, but, did you want to post a link or two to those other "slightly more complicated" explanations that you found useful?

@aminowrimo

I just want to say that I've somehow come across this discussion today and that the idea of the dry-message board inspired me to go and buy myself a small one, to practice my Russian alphabet/vocabulary now and, in the future, my Korean and Japanese characters! It's pretty much awesome, and one of the most useful tricks I've come across on Duolingo. :D So, thank you.

@dudly

I'm glad you found it helpful! Actually the dry erase board was already there, so it wasn't me so much as the fact that I saw it and was like... "WHITE SPACE!"

Best of luck with your Russian, Korean, and Japanese!

I think that's what I'll do. Of course if Mandarin comes along I'll drop everything and learn it.

That's really interesting because I am having an awful time with French, but doing well in German. German just makes more sense to me, while I am all but completely lost with French.
