Weekly Incubator Update: Tracking Progress from November 13th to November 20th

Romanian is now in beta!
The Romanian course is now available for the eager Duolingoers. Congrats to the course team, and to team Duolingo! This maybe the last course to start beta this month. The next wave is due next month, hopefully in time for the 2016 winter/summer holidays throughout the globe.

Swedish for Arabic is now out of beta!
The Swedish for Arabic course is now out of beta. Congratulations to the course team, to team Duolingo, and to all the learners who have helped the course reach this level of maturity by sending their suggestions and feedback.

Team Tamil switching to manual gear
You will notice an artificial drop in the progress for the English for Tamil course. This is because they have moved to manually updating their progress each week. The automated number did not do justice because the tree they are building is not yet complete and hence cannot provide the right denominator number for progress calculation.

After a L-O-N-G While

Hello from the English for Bengali Speakers Team,

Currently we are down to two contributors, which many of you have already noticed. We are not that far off schedule, but getting things done earlier is a plus!

For now, to be a contributor there are some rules which you have to follow-

1.This is NOT a sprint, this is a MARATHON.

It takes a tremendous amount of time (both physically and mentally) to work as a contributor for any given course. English for Bengali speakers is not an exception. YOU have to give at least two hours per week, either spread over seven days or in one day, however you like, whenever you prefer. But we need this time from you.

2.What's your streak?

You are on Duolingo and you are here to learn a language in the most fun way possible. We are looking for people with at least TEN days streak in ANY language. Why you ask? That's to make sure you are not applying to contribute to this course only because it is not offered. Your love of learning and spreading what you know cannot be quantified. What we need is a quality benchmark of perseverance. The TEN day streak as of now is MANDATORY before you are considered as a contributor.

3.Simple things need the most care

Yes, we are starting with sentences/ words like "An egg", "Seven" right up to "Where is the bank?" "How is your father?" and much more. Looks simple, sounds simple but needs extreme care.

4.Scores not necessary, your presence IS.

We are not looking for certificate scores, we don't need your past contribution. What we want is people who will work with dedication and not unfurl within a month without a translating a single sentence. Nobody has any use for contributors like that.

5.Take care in your contribution application.

Anyone fitting the above four is the person we are looking for. But the last step separating us from our newest contributor is the application. Your standard of written English must be on level with the written Bengali and vice-versa. Take some time before sending your application. Bottom line is - read it thrice, send it once.

Sounds difficult? We have one good news though, we are sifting through applications made so far. We want to take in two new contributors by December 21st, 2016. See you soon at the incubator!

Streak"?

Word Count

It was pointed out to me that our word count estimate is based on the word count of the course we used as a base (Russian). The Russian course has WAY more words than we're going to end up having in High Valyrian (more than twice as many, in fact), so, as a result, the projections will be off. Though we don't have a specific word count, you can assume, when looking at the above chart, that we're going to be working with approximately 2,000 words. Please keep that in mind when looking at the projections. Thus, with 109/2000, we're actually 5.5% of the way to our total!

Dedalvs, please let me know if you would like to manually provide your progress numbers each week. Team Tamil has started to do so beginning this week. I am still showing 2% based on 2.96% progress for your course that I saw earlier when I created this post.

Note: the English from Tamil pourcentage is now on their own estimation and not anymore an automatic (flawed) pourcentage.
Therefore, I didn't put anything on the "progression" for this team since it'd make no sense.

Please work on finishing Hindi! Don't get me wrong, I appreciate all the work you've done, but it's been stuck at 59% for a while. And with the constant re-changing of release dates it makes me ponder whether it will ever come out or not. Please get it out as soon as you can. Thank you!

Good the camera was covered per advice from Zuckerberg and Comey!

November 20, 2016

I didn't mean to embarrass you. :-) And I should probably also have mentioned that this weekly update was originally made by a mere user, right? (Ie. not a course contributor.)

It just seemed that someone might be under the impression that this is a roundup provided by staff.

(My camera has also been covered since that Zuckerberg snap! :-p)

November 20, 2016

Congratulations to the Romanian team!

November 20, 2016

979 days in incubator. At last it's there.

November 24, 2016

Just 9 days left for the estimated launch date for Swahili, hopefully this is true, although it seems a little unrealistic. We want to hear from you Team Swhaili. Keep the great work up! GO SWAHILI!

November 21, 2016

They've posted an update today! go check it out!!

November 23, 2016

Even when it was first announced at that date, I was expecting some delays—that's just how things go—but I hope the recent lack of communication does not mean the delay will be worse than anticipated. I remain in patient yet excited anticipation.

November 23, 2016

Thank you jitengore

November 20, 2016

I believe the High Valyrian team also has an update. They also stated that their actual progress is at 5.5%.

November 20, 2016

It is added. Although I am showing 2% using the automatic calculation until I hear from them.

November 20, 2016

I am still showing 2% based on 2.96%

Isn't 2.96% more 3% than 2%? ;)

November 20, 2016

Historically WIU used to round off. We moved to rounding down because (1) this matches the Duolingo's calculation and (2) when you are 2.51%, you have not not crossed the 3% line.

November 20, 2016

Ok. Thx for the answer.

(2) but when you're at 100%, you neither crossed it, you just "reached" it. ;)

November 20, 2016

English for Tagalog is 26.07416127133608%. I don't think it will be ready by Dec 24 but that's ok.... Bahala na (whatever will be, will be) :-)

November 21, 2016

I see that High Valyrian is making good progress.

Fact is, I wouldn't be surprised if High Valyrian made it into beta before Klingon.

Thanks jitengore :)

November 20, 2016

You're welcome, ModyDj!

November 20, 2016

Team Swahili says that they've hit 100% and are just waiting to do the audio recordings and polishing the lessons up saying haste makes waste, (or rather something about waiting for fruit to ripen).

Good job!

November 23, 2016

Was Tamil supposed to be minus 8? Is it possible for a course's progress to diminish?

November 20, 2016

We're self-reporting our completion starting this week, as jrikhal and jitengore have mentioned.

November 20, 2016

See the note in my above post.

Was Tamil supposed to be minus 8?

For the courses using the automatic (and flawed) estimation, yes it is possible and common that the percentage diminish.

November 20, 2016

The Tamil team has shifted to manual update of their course progress. The new number should be more realistic.

November 20, 2016

Ah, thanks. I didn't realize that. Thanks also to Jrikhal, I should have noticed it. More thanks to rohanshankar! Thanks for clearing up my confusion.

November 20, 2016

now that swedish for arabic is out, any chance we begin to see development on arabic for english? fingers are crossed...

November 23, 2016

They are two independent things: having many courses from Arabic doesn't make easier to create a course teaching Arabic, unfortunately.
The development of courses teaching Arabic needs that Duo tackles issues (that aren't impacting the courses teaching from Arabic) first.

Arabic for English could come soon (or not) — fingers are crossed, indeed — but it's independent from other courses with Arabic going/being out.

November 23, 2016

I wasn't sure how it worked, whether it was say, the swedish team working on swedish for arabic, or rather the arabic team working on it. I know swedish for arabic was pretty important to get out, and I'll happily wait for an arabic course (romanian proved that good things come to those who wait, as it's an outstanding course), but wasn't sure if due to the progress for these, we'd see something sooner. I know a big holdup with arabic was teaching a right to left language, but now that we have hebrew and such, the pieces seem to be in place. hopefully soon!

November 23, 2016

say, the swedish team working on swedish for arabic, or rather the arabic team working on it.

None of those because there is no "language" team (no "Swedish team", no "Arabic team", no "English team", no "French team") but one team per course (= per pair of langauges = per "learning language XX from language YY").

  • one team "Swedish from English"
  • one team "English from Arabic"
  • one team "French from Arabic"
  • one team "French from Italian"
  • etc.

Being one team per course, it's very often the case that one course and its reverse one share many contributors, when not all.
The day Duo staff will be able and decide to add it into the incubator, staff will ask contributors to the course SV<-AR if they want to contribute to the new reverse course AR<-SV. Thus the the "Arabic from Swedish" team will probably be same (at least partially) as the "Swedish from Arabic" team.

know a big holdup with arabic was teaching a right to left language

I don't remember to have ever heard (from staff) that it has ever be a big issue for Duo's system.
There was some little issues with the fact to change sense of writing, but they have been tackled long ago afaik and weren't as big to tackle as the one(s) they encounter apparently (-> it's for months they don't tackle them) in order to make possible to teach Arabic within the existing system.
