Well, Greeks are Europe's biggest cheese eaters, followed by the French., and the first country to produce wine in Europe, historically. :P

Can anyone tell me, I know there are 2 different ways to translate the English 'o' and 3 ways for 'i' kind of sounds, is there any pattern or rule to know when to use ο vs ω, or υ, ι, η, plus all the other combination letters or is it 'just' a matter of learning all the individual spellings? The only one I feel I get is σ vs ς.
There's no easy way to match these letters. They're mostly etymologically based. υ, ι, η used to have different pronunciation in Classical Greek. So today you'd have to know which word comes from which root in order to find out the correct spelling. It's mostly a matter of getting used to them. Some Greeks still have trouble with some uncommon words.
