It reminds me of "zmeu" (dragon-like creature of Romanian folklore). Sadly, "The relation with Romanian zmeură ‘raspberry’ has been deemed to be possible, but rather unlikely, by Alexandru Ciorănescu" (Wikipedia page on the Zmeu).

    In Russian, the word for snake is zmeya. I wonder if that could be an association with the kite.
