Duolingo is great but there is always room for more! It is said that songs and music help language learners. How about some basic songs with lyrics? No videos for now, we can go to YouTube for videos.

Many thanks.

I can't say much about the 'mainstream' Dutch music. I don't listen to it as I prefer either 'Boerenrock' (usually sung in some form of Low Saxon) or metal.

Try disney songs. You can find videos with subtitles for a lot of them. You could also just search for 'Kinderliedjes' (children's songs) that are probably easier to understand for a beginner.

For metal by the way, I can recommend 'Heidevolk' The lyrics do tend to contain some somewhat archaic words that most people wouldn't immediately recognise or use, but it's a pretty good band.

Veel succes met je Nederlands!

You can find a fair bit of Dutch language music on youtube, with videos and lyrics as well. Just beware that the modern/popular stuff (the rap/hip-hop) tends to contain a fair amount of not-family-friendly vocabulary.

The website songteksten.nl has lyrics to a lot of songs. You can check if the song you're listening to has the lyrics there.

Hi all! I'm Alessandra, a Duolingo English student, and the Musixmatch's Community Manager, nice to meet you all! Musixmatch is the world's biggest platform of song lyrics and translations and has a huge Community of music lovers that help us collecting lyrics and translating them. They also put them in time with music giving the possibility to everyone to enjoy synched lyrics through our free mobile apps and desktop app ( you can find more info here: https://about.musixmatch.com/apps).

I truly believe that lyrics have the real power to connect people and give insight into others countries culture and how foreign people think and feel.

On the top of that lyrics, as you mentioned, are an effective language learning tool. They almost always contain a lot of useful vocabulary, phrases, expressions and colloquialisms.

Reading lyrics can be a fun and effective method which help you memorize phrases and expression and improve pronunciation. Many of the words and sound patterns within a song, in fact, are repetitive and this makes it easier for them to stick in your mind.

Having said that, our Community would be happy to provide you with the translation of your favourite lyrics in your native language.

You can join the discussion in our forum or you can check if we have already the lyrics translated you need.

Hope you will enjoy our Community!
