Immersion

Please, do not delete the immersion menu. It seems that the question of its deletion is under consideration. As for me, according to my level of English, it is the only way to improve my knowledge. If you delete it, I will no longer use Duolingo. It would be a shame.

Gabrielle, Thank you for pointing me to this discussion. Under the "Dreams for Duolingo" topic, which is monitored by Duolingo staff, there are several comments about Immersion, including my own vision for Duolingo. For details, see: https://www.duolingo.com/comment/19246496

The Immersion Menu gives us an access to the world. This tool is just amazing and so clever and generous. You are meeting people from everywhere, you share with them your passion for languages but also your love for your own country. I just cannot imagine the end of such a wonderful, clever and generous system.

I agree. It is great to be able to ask questions of native speakers of other languages, and to work together to arrive at the right translation of difficult passages - and it is a pleasure to make friends here.

In my humble opinion, Duolingo would do a big mistake by deleting Immersion. Such an impressive tool is the key feature that makes the difference. Without it, Duolingo is a great place to learn the basics of a language, but not to improve your knowledge about it. Whatismore, one of the things I really love about Immersion is the collaborative environment: you learn with the help of a great community, and you can help others...Is there a language learning environment more challenging and encouraging? I think there is not. Duolingo Community Team, please, listen to our voice.

I have been using Duolingo since May of 2015. I have used it every day (no real skips yet!) for more than 430 days. I am not going into the details of what the last sentence entailed. It has become a family affair for me, my kids and my wife (when she can). I refer to Duolingo to everyone that mentions "foreign language" and then to some. Immersion is an essential feature to my foreign language goals. If Duolingo gives up on the immersion feature I guarantee that someone else will pick up the idea to the future loss of Duolingo. If needed, I am willing to help professionally (software, managing, language and/or marketing areas) the effort to keep the immersion feature viably. Thanks for taking seriously all the votes given and the lingots donated to GCHOTEAU.

Immersion is without any doubt the best thing this site has to offer and removing it would be a serious mistake.
There are many other sites that offer the basics, but I have not found any other site with a feature that matches immersion. It makes DL stand apart and proves DL does not want to focus on mere quantity, but also on quality. Through immersion DL offers advanced learners a way to keep training and improving their language skills by translating challenging texts in a stimulating and supportive learning community.

I don't know the reasons why DL has come to consider the option of removing immersion, but here are some practical ideas:
- if immersion is proving to be too much of a burden for staff in terms of moderating etc., I'd suggest making immersion only accessible to members who have completed the tree. This will keep trolls away, counter abuse, and will make staff's and other members' lives much easier.
- if immersion is a burden in terms of server costs, I'd suggest turning it into a paid feature (maybe a one-time access fee or a membership of a few dollars a year?) or perhaps setting up some donation program. I'd be glad to contribute.

I hope staff will not remove immersion. Immersion not only represents an excellent learning tool, but most of all, a valuable learning community with many skillful and enthusiastic translators willing to help others where they can. I am sure it is not in DL's best interest to alienate or lose those members.

I completely agree with your suggestions, DL without Immersion would be like an empty sack which cannot stand and lose any kind of attraction.

The "tree" is nothing but of a test for beginners and it is important only for introducing them to the further step, that is Immersion.

Without the latter, DL is going to face a certain and sudden death and it'll be a mournful day for the majority of us, who at present find in it the possibility to improve their languages' skills, to confront themselves with learned natives, and to make friends all over the world.

Let's hope that this may be only a false alarm; at any rate I agree with the idea of a membership annual fee and a quality test barrier for trolls.

I agree with you completely mio caro amico. Without immersion Duolingo will die on its feet.

We can all attest to its enormous value and would be willing to contribute to its continuance. Personally I'd happily pay a donation to enable it to remain free to those who can't afford to pay.

A level requirement is a brilliant idea as it would probably solve the troll problem overnight. It does not even need to be a very high level, 8 or 9 would probably be sufficient.

In any case we need immersion and we need it to be available to people who's accounts are currently without it.

It would be a great loss when Duolingo deletes the immersion menu. It's the function that makes the difference and the only way to learn something more than the basics of a language. It would be very boring to repeat the lections of the tree without practicing it in a friendly community. Furthermore, I would really miss the collaborative work with all the nice and helpful people from all over the world!

In case Duolingo would not appreciate to be submerged by mails - it is a free application, let us not forget - I was wondering if we have not another option. I was thinking we have to make a buzz so much impressive that Immersion as well as Duolingo itself would become unavoidable. All together, I am sure we have the talent to write a novel, a big novel, the first multi-hand global novel never written and maybe, with due care and attention, a cult classic for a novel... and, why not, which will become a cult movie? I do not know how much time is left but, at least, let's try it! Any volunteers? ☺

I will be very disappointed if they remove Immersion. Immersion is what really makes this site effective for learning languages. No offence but the trees are just so-so - they tend to not provide context or rationalisation, the sentences they choose are often random and unhelpful Duolingo only really becomes effective with Immersion where you get away from synthetic exercises to real language and the reverse translations I've recently being doing from English into French have been some of the most rewarding experiences I've had on Duolingo with native French speakers providing invaluable feedback on my work.

I understand that Duolingo doesn't want to go into the corporate translation business anymore - that's fine - but it's no reason to stop Immersion. Really they should add Immersion to all the remaining courses now. Presumably adding Immersion is a relatively simple process. Maybe the getting Duobot to work would be tricky(?) but the rest I would imagine is just pretty much the same as for any other Immersion.

Clear the Duolingo bosses underestimate just how important Immersion is and how much weaker the site would be without it. I hope they change their mind.
