German language musicals
Is anybody else a fan if German language musicals? They are amazing. My interest in the German language started when I was 16, and I became obsessed with the musical Tanz der Vampire. I took a few years of German in high school and college, enjoyed it, and then abandoned the language for nearly nine years when life got in the way, before picking up Duolingo. During those years, continuing to listen to and love my favorite musicals was my one tenuous connection to my German studies.
Anyway, as of late, I'm feeling very enthusiastic and gushy, because I downloaded the soundtrack to Mozart: das Musical around the same time that I started studying with Duolingo (note: it isn't actually Mozart's music. It's a rock opera about his life). It feels like that show has been opening up for me as I understand more and more of the lyrics every day, and it's just so much fun. I love it, so I never get tired of listening to it.
If you're looking for good German language musical recordings to download, I recommend Elisabeth, Tanz der Vampire, 3 Musketiere (originally Dutch, but there is a great German cast recording), Rebecca, and Rudolph: Affaire Mayerling. A lot of English language shows also have German language recordings. The German language recording of Next to Normal is especially fantastic.
