"the subway" or "the tube" should also be good, is that right?

That would be το μετρό with the ο being accented, not the ε.

The length, or the thing that measures (e.g. Electricity meter)?

το πολύμετρο = measures volt, ampere, and ohm

Would this also be used for meter in taxi

Close. that would be ένα ταξίμετρο:

https://el.wiktionary.org/wiki/ταξίμετρο

But if you were in a Greek or Cypriot ταξί and mentioned the μέτρο, I'm pretty sure the driver would be able to work out what you were referring to ;)

Hopefully, a native speaker can let us know if it would be common to shorten it to μέτρο if it was already clear from context that you were talking about a taximeter (like we often do in English).

Unfortunately, you cannot shorten the word. You have to say ταξίμετρο. :)
