I'm not sure when "bao nhieu" comes at the beginning or end of the sentence. In the sentence "How many elephants are there at the zoo" it comes at the beginning.

it's different from English, in English we say "How much" at the beginning, but in Vietnam we say it at the end of the sentence when you ask for the price. but when you wanna know the quantity of something " bao nhiêu " comes at the beginning EX: bao nhiêu quyển sách? - có 10 quyển sách ( quantity) quyển sách bao nhiêu? - 10 000 Viet Nam Dong ( price)

to complete Cloud's reply, I'd say you place the question words at the position of the answer in a declarative sentence.

  • bạn là ai? (who are you?)
  • bạn là John. (you are John.)
  • ai đã từng qua Pháp chơi? (who has ever travelled to France?)
  • tôi đã từng qua Pháp chơi. (I have travelled to France.)
  • tên cô ấy là ? (what is her name?)
  • tên cô ấy là Thủy. (her name is Thuy.)
  • con chạy nhanh nhất? (what animal runs the fastest?)
  • con báo săn chạy nhanh nhất. (the cheetah runs the fastest.)
  • bao nhiêu con voi ở đây? (how many elephants are there here?)
  • ba con voi ở đây. (there are three elephants here.)
  • chiếc váy này bao nhiêu? (how much is this skirt?)
  • chiếc váy này 100 000 đồng. (this skirt costs 100 000 dong.)

Why is "cái váy của bạn có bao nhiêu?" rejected?

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/SheTuti

Why 'có'? You don't want to ask 'Your skirt has how much?' (has how much of what?), but '(for) your skirt how much (money)?', right?

has/have = Có. ("Có" is want to speak "how many she has skirt?").

Quá mách móc: Cái váy của bạn bao nhiêu vậy? Nói như thế này nó mới thân thiện phù hợp với ngữ cảnh. Mà nó lại bảo sai. Vớ vẩn.

Is "cái váy của bạn giá bao nhiêu" also correct?

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/vngdhuyen

yes, but it's not a conventional construction. I'd tend translate your sentence as "as for your skirt, what's the price?"

Cái váy của bạn thì bao nhiêu? câu này dùng được mà????

Why the chiec vay is not correct?

Is cái really necessary here? In practically every other exercise here it's not use at the beginning of a sentence or question.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/vngdhuyen

with the presence of a possessive determiner (của bạn), "cái" is not necessary. that being said, it is definitely not abnormal to have "cái" at the beginning of a sentence or question.

Okay. Because it's not an accepted answer without it.
