Should and should have

I already know that "powinnam, powinieneś etc..." mean, "I should, you should." But how would one say in Polish "I should have, you should have etc...," like in these examples: 1. I should have done that 2. They shouldn't have said that 3. We should have been more careful Or things like that

Dziękuję z góry!

  1. Powinnam była/Powinienem był to zrobić.
  2. Nie powinni byli/Nie powinny były tego mówić.
  3. Powinniśmy byli bardziej uważać (literally "Powinniśmy byli być bardziej ostrożni", but it seems a bit too unnatural for me).

As you can see, it's simply a matter of adding "być" in a proper form. :)

You can say also "powinienem/powinnam" and so on or you can use "powinienem był/powinnam była".

I personally don't use był/była but it's a matter of personal preference, so if I just wanted to state a fact, I would say Powinnam to zrobić.

But if I wanted to express regret, I would use mogłam/mogłem or trzeba było e.g.:
Oh no, I forgot it again. I should have written it down!
O nie, znowu o tym zapomniałam. Mogłam to sobie zapisać!

You see, I was right, you should have listened to me
No widzisz, miałam rację, trzeba było mnie słuchać
