When can one differentiate between "nhảy" meaning "jump" or "dance"?

Surronding words, what would make more sense, i jumped over the puddle or danced over the puddle?

You can't. It's a pure guess with a simple sentence that lacks any context.

Imagine you arrive at a new town and someone tells you: We don't say "dance" here, we say "jump". Would cause some funny confusions, but you'd get used to it and learn to differentiate.

You accompany nhay with "dam" to indicate dancing.
