papá is supposed to have more stress on the end of the word indicated by the accent. Papa (potato) has no accent and no extra stress.

Papa has normal stress for a word which ends in "a," which is to stress the syllable before the last syllable. It would be written pápa, but the accent is omitted as this pronunciation is standard/implied. Papá is abnormal which is why the accent is present.

Father sounds more formal. You hardly hear anyone call their dad their father (well, I do, but that's me). I'm assuming that's why duo wants "padre" for "father" and "papá" for "dad".

Most smart phones you would long press the letter with the accent, and a list should pop up. Slide finger to the correct one. Let us know if it's not a smartphone.

If you're on a PC you can add other keyboards and switch between them pretty easily. Using the Spanish keyboard, pressing the comma key before the letter will make it accented.

"Papá" is dad. "Padre" is father. The difference is that "Dad" is more commonly used and is less formal than "Father".
