Surprised that 'Que mes estamos' wasn't accepted... Does it really have to have 'En' at the beginning?

Qué mes son estamos? Is wrong. I see 'en' is used but isn't the idea properly conveyed?

You are using two verbs for "we are" son and estamos That's gotta confuse Duo ;) "what month we are are?" What Duo wants: "En" = in "que" = what "mes" = month estamos = are we?

Had problems figuring out the word order. "What month are we in" To spanish: "In what month are we in?"

Is there a trick anyone has to remember, or do I just need to do a bunch of drills?

The main thing for me is that "Que mes estamos en" sounds kind of silly with the en at the end. The other way flows more, which has been getting me through a lot of the spanish.
