Christmas carols

Duolingo is a platform where different cultures intersect. Approaching winter holidays, when it is said that people are better, more tolerant, more than happy to communicate. A small group (Gabrielle, Emily, Rachel and me), we thought it would be nice to post Christmas carols to get to know better the beautiful traditions. It can be said that we do Christmas together. We thanks to those who will post links, as for those who will be glad to listen it!
We wish to all, to have a wonderful Christmas!

  1. Steaua sus rasare/The Star is Shining Above: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PE8wrlHshso
  2. Collection of Christmas songs/carols (including Trei Crai de la Rasarit/Three Magi from the East) by the Tronos group: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fxWkgQOVs5Alist=RDfxWkgQOVs5Aindex=1
  3. Fuego collection at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p2aSYOkbXwA=RDPE8wrlHshso=5

It was a "plot" Annita as I wrote in the message began (Gabrielle, Emily Rachel and me), so only a quarter of merit praise, but after subtracted the percentage who have posted.:-)) Happy holidays, Annita!

♪♫♬"Star in the East"♪♫♬ -- A shape note hymn - many early hymnals were printed in shape notes which made sight reading easy in any key.

♪♫♬No Room at the Inn♪♫♬ -- Mahalia Jackson made this marvelous recording in 1955, a year after the Supreme Court struck down "Jim Crow" meaning that, at long last, there would be room at the inn.

♪♫♬"Silver Bells"♪♫♬ Renee Fleming / Kelli O'Hara -- The song itself is a bit tinselly, but worth it to hear these two "beautiful voices" together

♪♫♬"Santo"♪♫♬ -- Composed and sung by Juan Diego Flórez. He is singing in Quechua, the language of the ancient Incan empire!

♪♫♬"Cuireadh do Mhuire"♪♫♬ -- "Invitation to Mary" written by Irish poet Máirtín Ó Direáin for Christmas 1942, offering Mary a place of refuge on "an island in the sea, far away in the west."

Thank you for starting the post, giving us the opportunity to do Christmas together.

Thank you Heather for the unique list. I enjoyed them all and I actually got sidetracked watching some of the non-Christmas clips from the "Mix - Cuireadh do Mhuire," "Mix - Juan Diego Flórez," and "Mix - I will bow and be simple!" How refreshing to see the good ole Irish, Spanish and American English together in one list... Merry Christmas!

Thank you, Daniel. Merry Christmas!
"Christmas Carols" is becoming one of my all time favorite posts. :D :D :D

This is fantastic! Most I haven't heard before. Thank you.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/2014siri

I like Sibelius - you have truly melancholic songs - but so beautiful! I enjoyed to listen to Finnish;-)

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Zzzzz...

I tried to find some happy songs too, but they are all either German (O Tannenbaum) or Swedish (Tomtarnas julnatt) translations. :P

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/annika_a

There's also https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gqSMHKwR4xs, but it's actually originally Estonian! :-) (Not a particular favourite, just a happy one, and one I was surprised of the origin of, since it's been translated into many languages.)

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Zzzzz...

P.S. Why are you posting this on the Romanian forum? I read the post many times but I am still not certain whether you want Romanian carols or carols in general. :)

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Gabrielle28671

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/CommeuneTexane

I posted a link in the French forum. This is wonderful; I intend to spend a lovely evening tonight listening to carols!

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Florica10

In fact, I we could have a spring festivals song thread on the other side to celebrate?

Bonjour Brodelet.

I was actually involved with a choir a while ago that was singing Il est né le divin enfant...but it was an awful version that had the words in English! (He is born the divine Christ child / Let us sing his nativity). J'étais furieux ! On le dois chanter en français !!!!!

I did not in 1111, but James, I stopped one day a couple of times, I now only 54, but lingots I have close to 3000, and I gave more on this site. :-))

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Zzzzz...

I have to spam the discussion by complementing you on your streak! 1111! Wow. :)

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/DrWho100

Incredible streak! Thanks to you, too, James ;-)

Congrats James, impressive streak!
My favorite Christmas carols are actually English ones, "Deck the Halls" and "The First Noël". Oh and "Adeste Fideles", which has been translated into many languages (Herbei nun Ihr Gläubigen, O come all ye faithful), never fails to get me in a Christmas-sy mood. :-)
@Florica, thanks for posting, I am studying Romanian at present, and I was looking for some Romanian Christmas carols just the other day. It's a very beautiful language indeed.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Florica10

I glad to hear that you learn Romanian, I think it is hard for those who are not native.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/XD29

Actually it's not very hard so far. But I have a studied several other Romance languages before, so I come across a lot of cognates and similar grammar patterns.

Were you aware that the people of the Nordic countries celebrate St. Lucia on 13 December? We have turned this into a semi-religious song about light in the middle of darkness. Here it is in Swedish. :)

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Gakrotoniate

Hello! Yes, I know this your famous tradition, but, maybe, you don't know that in my city we celebrate St. Lucia on 13 December, too. According to an ancient custom, the boys build in every neighbourhood and on the beach piles od wood, that, then they burn. The different neighbourhoods compete against each other trying to build a higher and lasting fire. The boys roast and eat sausages, sing, dance and have fun. The grown-up people look at them and envy them.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/2014siri

Thanks for Gloria ;-)

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Gakrotoniate

I am happy that you like it!

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Florica10

Thank you Gianfranca , are very beautiful!

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/BenYoung84

I'm sure Gianfranca gets that a lot.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Gakrotoniate

I thank you for your beautiful idea.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Gakrotoniate

Thanks, Rachel. All the songs that I listened to here in this list, open the hearts to others people and to kindness.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/BenYoung84

We don't have a long history of homegrown carols in Australia. The best ones were all written by James and Wheeler in the 1960s. Aussiecraig linked to one of them (Christmas Day) already. Here are some more of my favourites:

A true classic but I will always prefer this British icon: John Lennon.

A bit different song also from Britain.

Aaaaaaaand the obligatory earworm. :)

Comfort and joy!

Sorry Daniel, I know many Italian Christmas songs, but i cannot tell you the links. However, you should listen to the songs of CLAUDIO CHIEFFO on youTube. He was a singer and a songwriter of my city (he is now dead). He wrote a beautiful Christmas song: "In questa notte splendida" His songs are all fine. Try to listen. Merry Christmas, Lia

Tante grazie cara Lia! Buon Natale! I found a couple of links:

  1. Claudio Chieffo interpreter's little music lesson prior to playing "In questa notte splendida": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rcnVJtbr74Q

  2. Claudio Chieffo collection (with several Christmas songs): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0CeSeRPlkP8list=PLL5DyRa0jE_YuEjLwXL0ftRJ9aB-7JMv2

I love Christmas music from all over (old and new) but when sung in Italian, it seems SPECIAL to me!

This is a Swiss christmas carol from the nativity play "D'Zäller Wiehnacht" (Zell's Christmas, https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/D_Z%C3%A4ller_Wiehnacht ) by Paul Burkhard. He has written eight carols for this play. This is the first one, which is about the Star of Betlehem:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WB5U1MwN7Yc

1)

Das isch de Stern vo Bethlehem.

Mached eu uuf und folged däm!

Es isch de allerschönschti Stern.

Chömed ihr Lüüt vo nah und fern,

chömed ihr Lüüt vo nah und fern.

2)

Zum Heiland füehrt de Stern eus hii,

Drum folged alli, gross und chlii!

Er liit im Chrippli arm und bloss,

Aber er wird en König gross,

Aber er wird en König gross.

3)

Lobed und danked eusem Stern,

Folged ihm noh und folged gärn!

Eimal dänn winkt er eus und trait

Über-n-eus i d’Ewigkeit,

Über-n-eus i d’Ewigkeit

My attempt of an English translation:

1)

This is the Star of Betlehem.

Get up and follow it.

It is the most beautiful star,

come, people, from nearby and far.

come, people, from nearby and far.

2)

To Christ the star is leading us

Therefore follow everyone, tall and little,

He lies in the crib, poor and bare,

but He will become a king so great,

but He will become a king so great.

3)

Praise and thank our star,

follow it and follow willingly,

once then he will beckon to us and carry

us by Him to eternity,

us by Him to eternity.

Well, I asked all of my Brazilian friends to recommend some xmas carols. All of them said that they don't care or think about xmas carols. But this is a sample of some of the things they came up with. (And most of what they recommended wasn't even in Portuguese) lol

I could continue, but you get the picture. One guy responded "No one gives a s*** about that. Uma canção de natal. https://youtu.be/93S_l0qZrXA?list=PLDA9287DC6EEE3D3E

So that's it for Portuguese xmas carols guys LOL

I'm more into Christmas songs this time of the year, but carols are up to my alley too. Some of my Romanian favourites are: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9_SlNP-sUB4 ; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9A7122QXEsE ; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BoAKPrzrKPI&list=RDTkLPMsE-_J0&index=6 ; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=clIPTDAmJQ0

And something funny as two (maybe more) of the most famous children 's Christmas carols of Romania come from Germany: O Tannenbaum (O brad frumos!) and Morgen kommt der Weihnachtsmann (Maine vine Mos Craciun). Both (and many others German Christmas lieds) are my top favorite since childhood.

But la creme de la creme of the whipping cream one can listen it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z8Vfp48laS8

Although the Brazilians aren't much into Christmas music and Santa Claus, this is what two Brazilians told me that they celebrate in Brazil which could be compared to many cultures' idea of Christmas.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midsummer

https://en.wikipedia.org/.../Nativity_of_St_John_the_Baptist

https://pt.wikipedia.org/.../Nascimento_de_Jo%C3%A3o_Batista

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midsummer#Brazil

QUOTE: "Portuguese St. John's Day, brought to Brazil during colonial times, has become a popular event that is celebrated during a period that starts one week before St. Anthony's Day (June 12) and ends after St. Peter's Day (June 29). This nationwide festival, called "Festa Junina" (June Festival), or São João, takes place during midwinter in most of the country.

Rural life is celebrated through typical clothing, food, and dance (particularly square dancing, or quadrilha). The quadrilha features couple formations around a mock wedding whose bride and groom are the central attraction of the dancing. A kind of maypole (called "pau-de-sebo") is also raised and used in some festivities. It's prepared a typical hot drink called "quentão" (very hot) that consists in a mix of fruits and spices with a lacing of Cachaça. On St. John's Day eve celebration, it's sometimes placed a ritual of walking on live-coal made of the remnants of the main bonfire, which is a traditional part of the party, on barefoot by midnight. It's believed that if the one who walks is strong in faith, he shall not be hurt.

Two northeastern towns in particular have competed with each other for the title of "Biggest Saint John Festival in the World", namely Caruaru (in the state of Pernambuco), and Campina Grande, in Paraíba. The festivities also coincide with the corn harvest, dishes served during this period are commonly made with corn, such as canjica and pamonha; dishes also include boiled or baked vegetable corn (often buttered), sausages, sweet potatoes, peanuts, and numerous sweet dishes such as rice pudding. The celebrations are very colorful and festive and include the use of fireworks and bonfires.

My dear friends on Duolingo, in the moment I see no possibility to say thank you all for being so wonderful supporters and friends. I'm happy that I got to know such great and interesting people all over the world. I really learned so much from native speakers in English and French. I apologize for using this Christmas carol platform, but I wanted to say (a last?) thank you and good bye, wishing you all the best, Florica, Jack, Mari, Irmgard, XD, Gabrielle, fumerolle, Heather, Daniel, James and all the others, I met in this discussion!

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/caro85yabuelo27

¡Queridos amigos! Ernesto

Thank you Getta, we expect more!

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Florica10

Duolingo era animat, era viu... acum e tern si plictisitor. Dar poate...

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Florica10

Vom vedea, Florica. Que sera, sera...vorba cantecului!

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Florica10

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Gabrielle28671

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/jeanmich29

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Florica10
