Is "acesta" the formal variety and "ăsta" colloquial? Or are they completely interchangeable, with no difference in style?

Yes, it's a colloquial form of Acesta. It also can have a derogatory sense when referring to people.

good question! I was wondering what the difference is myself!

Shouldn't the translation be "This is my big brother"?

So what could be the difference or translation of ăsta and acest. I am getting really confused with all these demonstratives. And in this case how would we know to use ăsta?

Have a look at this video - it explains it all very clearly although it still takes some getting your head around: https://youtu.be/2sfzIcIVVcw
