The 2017 Duolingo Eurovision Challenge:

Hi everyone,

I have had the idea of doing this competition for a while now. It is not a competition where you have to gain the most XP, or finish the tree first. This is a competition where you will have to do serious learning.

Introduction

This competition is for beginners in European languages. The languages of the 42 countries participating in the Eurovision Song Contest 2017, in Kiev (This doesn't include Australia, sorry).

You will be representing a country (the country where the language you are studying is spoken). You will study the language for one month (January 2017), and then take a test at the end of January to see if you have learned the language or not. There will be four learners per country, and the learner with the highest test score, will win the national selection, and then represent their country in the 2017 Duolingo Eurovision Challenge.

You will then have 1-2 weeks (while I correct the tests from the national selections) to review what you have already learned. If you win the national selection, you then have until the end of April 2017 to study for the Duolingo Eurovision Challenge. The country with the highest test score wins. The winner will be announced May 13th 2017, the day of the final of the Eurovision Song Contest!

The tests will be the same format for all languages, so one language will not have an easier test than the rest (They will also be devised carefully so you can't cheat on them:)

Countries and Languages

Below is a list of all languages you can learn, and which country you will be representing:

~ If you want to learn Albanian, you will represent Albania.

~ If you want to learn Ukrainian, you will represent Ukraine.

~ If you want to learn Welsh or Cornish, you will represent the United Kingdom.

Please note that this list of languages is set. I will not be adding to it anymore, and even if the country pulls out of the actual Eurovision Song Contest, this list won't change.

The Rules

  1. The language you wish to learn must be a second language, and not your native.

  2. You must be a beginner in the language.

  3. You can not choose to learn two languages, you must choose one.

  4. You must take the test on a specific day (TBD), with a specific deadline to complete the test.

  5. Follow me so I can find your account easily if I need to give you updates.

Where will you be getting the tests from? What level will they be?

(I ask because resources are scarce for some of the languages listed, and I'd like a concrete idea of what scope will be required before picking one.)

December 13, 2016

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/pinemartens

Same, I'd like to know more about the tests before choosing a language! How in depth is each topic? What areas will be covered (speaking, reading, etc.)? How are you going to accurately get all the languages marked?

Edit: Ya know what, sign me up to represent Azerbaijan anyway! I need a challenge ;)

December 14, 2016

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/otsogutxi

The topics are not too advanced. I might create a list of prescribed vocabulary that you will need to learn before anyone starts learning anything in January.

I'll add you under Azerbaijan too:)

December 14, 2016

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/otsogutxi

Hi!

For the National Selections, I will be devising the tests, because they will be quite simple. All the tests will have the same format, and cover the list of topics in the post above. Basic vocabulary and basic grammar.

For the main competition, I might need to enlist the help of native speakers for certain languages like Montenegrin as the vocabulary and grammar on the test will be beyond the basics.

December 14, 2016

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/garpike

Ah, I see; that must still be quite an undertaking if lots of people sign up!

I'm surprised you didn't include Basque (one can be a Spaniard and speak Basque, surely?), particularly considering all your work on that excellent Memrise course which I had a dabble in some time ago. (And Catalan for that matter, which actually has a Duo course.)
Anyway, notwithstanding, I should like to represent Georgia, please.

December 15, 2016

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/otsogutxi

Added! Basque and Catalan speakers are usually very proud of their own region and would prefer to be put under the Basque Country or Catalonia rather than Spain.

Your post didn't say: is there an audio component? Not all of these languages are easy to find audio lessons for.

And: Is there still room on the Albanian team? I'd like to sign up for Albanian.

December 15, 2016

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/otsogutxi

There won't be an audio component because some of the languages have little to none resources for audio available.

and yes, there's still room for Albanian:)

December 16, 2016

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Rappelke

I was so worried about there being a rush for Albanian - there are foreigners living in Albania and Kosovo now who I assumed would jump in immediately. Of course, they would probably help Albania's standing in the final competition more than me. I will loyally cheer for whoever wins the first round, though.

December 16, 2016

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/garpike

I was tempted by Albanian, but audio material is rather thin on the ground (completely nonexistent for Gheg) and a half-decent Albanian TTS doesn't seem to exist.

December 16, 2016

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Rappelke

Lack of audio is no excuse! I'll use whatever Google has, and cross my fingers that Albanians are an understanding people. In both senses of the word.

Hello. Are you still hosting this challenge, even though your slots did not fill up as anticipated??? You must be disappointed...

December 28, 2016

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/CharmingTiger

Suz - It is to be expected, of course. There is simply no way that all of those slots would fill up. There just isn't enough exposure for any one post, even one of this caliber!

30+ people signing up is rather amazing in itself. I assume that with that many people already in the challenge, we will be able to begin as planned. From what I have seen in the past, delaying start times on competitions and challenges to fill up open slots only causes people already in it to lose interest or make other plans in the meantime.

December 28, 2016

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/SuzuLingu

Yes, dearest Charming One, I realized that after a bit. <deep sigh> I suppose this challenge might have gotten more exposure if it hadn't been at this particular time of year. Most people are so busy with other things. I agree. Nice to see so many willing contestants, nonetheless. I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens...

The tests are a bit more time consuming then I first thought, so I have not finished all of them yet. I want to be fairer and give them all out at the same time, but use this chance to study more.
