German course update rolled out to more users
The revised version of the German course that was rolled out to 50% of new users 8 months ago has now been rolled out to 50% of older users.
We'd like to emphasise that it was not the contributors' decision to delay the roll-out. If it were up to us, everyone would have the updated tree by now.
As a reminder, here's the update we posted 8 months ago:
"Last year, we launched a major new version of the course, which came with greatly improved metrics, but of course, we weren't able to fix all the problems of the previous tree, and because of technical limitations, a few new problems emerged. The latest tree version, which we have just launched as an A/B test, is just a minor revision. We've fixed a few things here and there and added a couple of words as well as a skill on relative pronouns.
The usual caveats related to A/B tests apply:
If you get the new tree and previously had a golden owl, you'll have to redo those lessons that have been affected by the new tree version.
The A/B test is part of the process of allowing everyone to have the highest quality course. Don't fret if you don't have it yet. If the metrics show that the new version actually is better, you'll get it too in due time."
Apparently I have, and yea, the tree is much longer now.
How many skills and lessons are added now, and words, if I may ask?
I've just counted the number of new lessons, and I think I counted 68. That'll keep me out of mischief for a while.
Thanks course team for the early Christmas present!
Alles was wir jetzt machen kann ist, es zurück zu gewinnen! Mehr Arbeit, hier komme ich ...
Just a quick update:
We've just learnt that the latest tree version (the one launched 10 months ago) will be rolled out "to more users slowly in the coming weeks".
Not surprised. I'm in the last section of the tree, so of course they will update it before I reach the end. :)
Let's hope/pray it'll not be delayed for another 8 months before it's pushed "live" for all users.
I was not expecting it all and so it came as a pleasant surprise this morning. I am very excited though because it is always great to learn more on Duolingo. I am pretty sure this will be the 3rd or 4th time I will get my German golden owl but that just shows how the team are always improving it which is great!
I think I might have got the new tree when it rolled out 8 months ago, but I can't remember for sure - is there any way of checking whether I've got the new one or still have the old one? (e.g. lessons that are only in the new tree or something?)
Thank you for the update. The first thing I noticed was that more common phrases are now in the German tree. The German learners will be delighted to see the words they encounter during their courses :)
On one hand, it's great... On the other - losing progress because of one added word, or repeating lessons because of added proper names (like "new" word "New York") is a bit annoying. I guess it can't be helped.
UPD: I have to admit that the new words are pretty useful.
Yeah, it is a bit annoying, but again useful. I have to 'regold' per checkpoint every day, which takes 4 days. That's if there is not weird/ new sentence To come
Ah, I don't think you can do that. My checkpoints are grayed out. However, after looking at the words, I have been testing out of some skills if I think I know what is listed. That speeds things up a bit
Eh... I've just finished 're-golding' the whole lesson in 4 days, just like what I have said 4 days ago. :) Nothing's impossible.
Congratulations! Nice to see that gold owl again huh? I got mine back too. Actually it was fairly easy. They must have missed most of the vocabulary/grammar that I'm still forgetting.
Thank you for the update (and for all the team's hard work in development)! I had just been re-golding, finally, from the previous tree update. But now I feel even more motivated!
Wow! I've been working on it on and off all day and still have a bunch more to do to get my golden owl back. Thanks for the additions!
Good timing, I just started German yesterday, and am looking for new friends, I had the app years ago and recently started using it again, but I do not see any options for friends, as in challenge, comment, practice, nothing. Am I doing something wrong?
So is it normal that yesterday I had everything golden up to Communication 1 and now I have various lessons completely at zero like Plurals 0/4?
Yes. On the plus side, when you re-do these "newly new" skills, you'll get another 2 lingots for the skill :)
hahaha ok, man i had just picked up Duolingo again and after two weeks I had just finally gotten all my unlocked lessons to golden. Well I guess I can do it one more time
You need lingots? Here, have one of mine. I'm not sure what else to do with them.
Oh, no! I just meant to be encouraging about re-doing skills. I've got a pile of lingots, too, but thank you for your generosity :)
I'm pretty sure I had the new tree since I remember re-learning a bunch of skills, but apparently I didn't because I just got it re-organized again? Or does the tree shuffle around more often than I thought?
I don't mind, anyway. Always good to go over old skills. Even if I just went through all of them during the last month :D
Well this is interesting. I have received an update 8 months ago, and I have also received it now. I can see some new skills (or at least I think they are new, because I can't really remember what was updated 8 months ago). On the other hand, I remember completing "Materials" skill for example, but now it became empty again... So it seems to me it is kind of a rollback + update for some of us. Anyway, not a big problem. Rather a motivation, I would say. Good work. :-)
I suggest that everyone that received the updated tree verify that they still have a 'streak freeze' if they have purchased one. I did my lessons yesterday and upon logging in today, I noticed that my progress from yesterday was erased and my experience reset to 0. This incident resulted in my streak freeze being consumed. So, just a friendly, cautionary, word of advice, double-check whether you have your streak freeze if you had one prior to the tree update.
I appreciate the update to the tree!! I'd just hate to lose my streak!!
I started re doing them and sometime even though it says 0/4 after doing one of those four the whole lesson would be golden again sooooo it is not that bad, plus there are new things to learn
Yes, I just discovered that too. Also, the individual lessons are shorter. Sometimes there do not seem to be any new words. Maybe they just cut some skills into shorter sections???
I noticed this too. Did anyone test to see if just doing a generic "Review" would pick clear the levels that now show as incomplete?
From your suggestion I tried the generic review. It did clear just one skill. At least in that case, it didn't really make progress any faster.
If I haven't seen a change and still have my golden owl, does this mean I already had the change beforehand?
It could mean that, or it could mean you did not get the update this time either, as mentioned in the main post here. One way to check is to see if you have the Relative Pronouns skill in the bottom area of the tree. If you have that skill, you've gotten the update eight months ago. If you do not have it, then you didn't get it then or now.
Oh, I see. I thought they meant that the update had been finalized, and that part was just a quote from 8 months ago. Thanks!
Nice work! I'm certainly pleased to see that imperative comes a lot earlier now.
Ah, ok, that explains why so many of the previously completed levels are now shown as incomplete. Is that right?
Finally, I've found the answer. Yesterday I just updated the Duolingo app in my Android (I hardly update apps. Haha. XD). When I opened the German tree, I was so surprised to see that some lessons that I've completed marked as incomplete.
It's good to know that the German team is always working on the German tree for improvement. Well done! :D
What I do find annoying is that I have to do certain lessons again, but then again, have I not forgotten half of what I have learned from those lessons despite their strength bars saying otherwise? Also, I can easily take tests, and already, I am racking up a lot of XP and lingots. Otherwise, good update in that we have more to learn.
I want this new version too... Hey duo come on, release that tree 3.0 right away... ! Does this test A/B really work ? I have doubts about that because the frequency of use between the users is totally different!
This discussion is 9 months old. It's long since everybody has the last tree version (Tree 3).
