Having the same problem -- sound was working perfectly for one week, and then just stopped. Any suggestions? Duolingo suggested that it was my flash player, but it is up to date.

It has been more than one year, and this problem is ongoing. Developers don't seem to care about it at all. But this is such an annoying problem every time, 'type watch you hear' without hearing anything! I tried every possible solution even restarting the sound drive and it didnt work out

I am having the same problem, the sound cuts out so I need to refresh the test to get it working again. Sometimes it can go for long periods with sound then other days it cuts after the first round. Not good for the listening exercises.

Madness? Three days ago you left a comment on this post, saying you've been having 'this issue' (what issue?) for a whole week. I instructed you to submit a bug report, clearly describing the problem you're experiencing, as no developer is going to crawl 6-year-old posts for vague comments about the 'sound not working'. To then go on and claim that 'they' (who?) deny there is an issue (what issue?), is preposterous. If you refuse to submit a bug report, then you'll just have to live with whatever problem you think you're having.

There is a problem and it has been around for more than 5 or 6 years.

Yet it seems no one will describe what that problem is. This post only says 'sound not working'. It was made six years ago and, while we don't know what the problem was, it was addressed by an admin and apparently resolved. Now others are posting here saying they have the same problem. But all we can tell from that is that there is 'something' wrong with their sound. That tells us nothing.

If you won't say what the problem is, you cannot reasonably expect anyone to address it. I'm sorry you find that 'unacceptable'.

This response is totally unacceptable. There is a problem and it has been around for more than 5 or 6 years. I fixed it by going to a browser that is an offshoot of Chrome. Basically what you have to do is control the amount of info that gets fed back to Doulingo. I don't remember if it was just cookies or the ads, or both. I you go to a Browser called Brave you problems should go away. I am running this on Mac Laptop.

It has been an on/off problem for months. Now (2014 Aug 15) having booted and re-booted my laptop and checked various settings DUOLINGO WILL NOT RECORD A THING! Checked to ensure that SKYPE was hearing me OK and no problem at all. I've wasted lots of time which was supposed to go to learning. DL please fix this bug.

It is extremely frustrating that the sound -- after so many complaints -- is still not fixed. Nevertheless, the course keeps submitting student challenges to voice a particular sentence or a word, then complaints since it did not capture my voice. Would you, please, suspend forcing the part of exercises that invokes what you can not "hear" until you fixed the problem. Thank you!

Here we are 5 years later and this problem still exists. My best guess is that it is with Flash, but that problem should go away in another year or 2. Adobe has stopped support for the Flash drivers. They are too difficult to maintain. So now people have to migrate to HTML.

So, not sure if someone found a solution, but using CHROME browser, all sounds are active and working and microphone works like a charm, but when clicking on any activities that involve the speaker icon, nothing works (and therefore the lesson item is marked incorrect).

The only solution I have found is to turn the speaker OFF and that eliminates that portion of the lesson from the plan (but doesn't help with why it isn't working in the first place).

Hey guys. I had such problem on windows 10 (Chrome). This may happen cause you may have multiple different sound cards set up on your computer. So to fix this problem just try to select another sound card in sound settings.

Since I started using Microsoft Edge for learning on Duolingo, the sound works OK. In the past I had used Chrome - the issues occurred.

From personal investigations in the past, I think this answer is correct: The problem is with some cross-site security (Duolingo trying to play sounds from a different site via https protocol). Chrome with strong security settings may consider this a security risk, and decide not to play, Edge may decide this is no security risk and play it.

I use Microsoft Edge and I still have this problem. Today (16-5-2019), I tried to test out of a level and lost all three hearts because there was no audio on 'type what you hear' questions. This has been happening more since I switched to PLUS - so, I'm paying for this! Very annoying.

The speakers work for everything but the sentence/phrase. I can hear the ding it gives for a correct answer, I can listen to itunes etc. But it won't let me skip the question (if I click on the skip button, it tells me I answered incorrectly, and knocks me off a heart).

im trying german french italian and irish (gaelic just started today so I'm very excited about that one) and they each appear to have the same problem with the sound. I inform duolingo by going to the selections lower left to say sound not working but it doesn't appear to fix the problem. I seem to have a great run of the sound continuously working and then times when it barely works at all. I love the site for all the information but it invalidates when the sound cuts out and you have no idea what anything means especially when you are trying these out for the first time. I sincerely hope they fix the sound for us. It can be brilliant for weeks and then kaput. After suffering the same problem many times in the past and having a total failure of DL to hear about 2 weeks ago I did considerable analysis and came to the conclusion that when DL refused to "hear" at all the problem was associated with an update of Adobe Flash. So I went in and changed some Flash settings and DL recovered its hearing - please don't ask me which settings I changed but I did the same on both of my computers with the same positive result.

However this does NOT account for the intermittent problems I had yesterday when DL turned a deaf ear to me just the odd time or why, a little later, it went completely deaf and I had to turn off the sound to complete a lesson. Then log-out and log-in again; turn the sound back on thus curing the hearing problem.

All in all this is a very frustrating, time-wasting problem that DL should have sorted out by now. Over to you DL.

Same probleme here: Can't hear, and can' record using the app on my iPhone. Reboted iPhone without success. My problems started after I began to use Chrome on PC parallell with iPhone connecting my PC to a headset with mic. The frequency of using duolingo (on any platform) has for above reasons dropped. Have you checked your Flash settings on your computer? (See above) Assuming you're running Windows different browsers use different Flash versions right now. I found when I used, the hated (by me) Internet Explorer when Firefox sound didn't work that IE did but I hated the way it treated copying so went back to FF and tweaked the Flash settings to always allow DL. Now, for the most-part, the sound works. If you're on Mac sorry to have wasted your time.

Actually, I found a solution that works for me! I thought I had a problem only with DuoLingo, but it seems that I have a sound issue with my iPhone. The ringing sound and some alarms are working well, but I can not hear any volume when listening to videos (and DuoLingo). I then checked the AirPlay icon below on my phone when I was looking on a video (with no sound for me...), and it seems that it was stucked on "Docking" - it was not possible to choose the iPhone icon since this was missing. This means that the audio was send to "Docking" and not the iPhone! I do not have any docking station, so what to do? After some search, I found the solution to this issue: It is th charger/cable I have in my car! Yesterday I went out in my car, connected once more and disconnected. Voila - it works perfect again (DuoLingo and video audio). PS! I have also contacted DuoLingo support, and they tried promtly to help me out (no solution). If you need help - contact them (or google it), I assume they have no capacity to read this forum.

This just happened for me too... The other day, sound stopped working using Duolingo on my iPhone for several hours, and then learned other people were having the same problems on PC (whereas mine was fine). This advice does not help. This is an intermittent problem that is happening on various browsers on both Macs and PCs. In most all cases the sound will work fine with other programs or website but not with Duolingo!

I have found a 'temporary' solution (that worked for me):

if you have a second tab with duolingo open (meaning two tabs of duolingo open), when the sound stops working, go to your other duolingo tab and scroll up and down. I find when i do this (specifically, it worked with this thread), then i found that almost immediately the sound came back (only to be lost every time i switched applications/tabs).

The missing sound will be a duolingo wide fault and not language specific. My android phone has not played sound for 2 days but the pc does. I've checked the settings. Sound plays on other phone apps. I note that when I select a lesson the speaker icon and wifi icons disappear.

This problem is still present to this day, but in Norwegian course. Sentences are not fully spoken and i can't answer them correctly. They are always getting cut off in the middle or the last word of sentence. Something is happening to Duolingo, why are they not fixing things.

It appears, reading through these comments, the problem is with Duolingo. My headset/ microphone work everywhere else. It doesn't work for me in Chrome. Duolingo, this is the 21st century, people are using headsets with built in mics. Please fix this. It can't be that hard, no other application has such difficulty hearing someone speak.

It happens very often in the middle of the lesson, regardless of the language! Annoying especially when I have just a few exercises left and hearts are running low! Curiously, the sound on my iPad will work for half a lesson and then kick out. The only way to reset the sound is to shut the iPad down and restart thereby losing my progress in the lesson. Aggravating ! There should be a way to complete lessons without the need for sound.

Same here. Mine stopped about one month ago. Thank goodness I moved to Italy anyway. My listening proficiency tanked at first because of this Duolingo audio error, but being spoken to in Italian by real Italians in an immersion environment forced it to rise. "Learn it or die, brain" basically. Still it would be so nice if DL fixed this problem. It'd be great to continue studying at night.

It has happened to me as well, on and off, but there's one time I was in timed practice and I waited in vain for the sound of the phrase to write and it didn't come, even with clicking to the sound button. Other sounds would work fine, it's just sometimes the loading (it seems) of the phrase.

My belief is that we actually have two problems with similar symptoms.
1. An Intermittent Problem and; 2. A Permanent Problem.

My sound quit working on my iPhone 4s, and when I upgraded to an iPhone 6, I still didn't have sound. Worked with the Apple people trying to resolve issue, but nothing worked: deleting app and reinstalling, doing a "restore" on the phone and then reinstalling. Didn't help. Still no sound. I have just had this problem and tracked it down (it might be a different cause for you). I have 5.1 speakers, and in the Windows sound config menu I ran a test. All speakers were working fine except the middle one. It appears that the voice from DL comes exclusively from this speaker (if you have one).

So after fixing my issue (a very slightly loose wire) and testing it in windows, DL is back working for me.

I realise this won't be a fix for all, but it might help someone out there.

Have WIN 8.1 + Firefox 37.0.1.(Latest). Everything OK with DL, except that my vocal answers stopped to be heard around the 4:th of April 2015. That time WIN had a major update. I had the same problem. A while ago I was reading a thread where they said, that it may has something to do with your sound software or something - because I have a 5.2 system connected and duo needs stereo, so you will have to change your sound options from 5.2 or surround/ whatever to stereo.

But this solution was to complicated for me - see, I don't want to change this thing all the time, only because I am doing some minutes on duo. And FINALLY It hit me - what's the easiest way to get your sound to stereo - plug in some in ear speakers! ... I tried that, and it worked perfectly.

Maybe you should also try it. Sorry if that's not the thing for everybody...

I now have it working on Windows Edge on my PC, and strangely it's never been a problem for my Samsung phone using Chrome. We think it's a Windows 10 issue, to get us to use Edge? This is further annoying, because someone made a wonderful add-on for Chrome that changes your keyboard back and forth for languages like Greek, Russian and Vietnamese for Duo writing exercises. (It's discussed somewhere here, but I can't access it from my phone.) And BTW, other language programs I use, like Living Language (which has some free 'lab' activities) and the beta ai.glossika.com, which has some free stuff also have the same issue, so it isn't really a Duo thing. I didn't have this kind of issue with Rosetta Stone last I used it about a year ago.

Sorry, psn, your solution doesn't work. The problem is that if I am asked to "type what you hear" and I can't hear a thing, I can skip the question, only to see it pop up again, and again, whiteout sound. It often happens especially when I am at the end of the exercise. Often, I can't finish exercises where I had no mistakes because once I am faced with the "no sound issue" there is no way out of it. When it happens, I stop Duo altogether and call it a day. Very frustrating! Someone suggested turning off the sound in "settings" -- If you do that in the middle of the lesson, it cancels everything you had done to that point. Besides, it's a sporadic problem. And, what is more, who would wants to do a foreign language program without sound?!

FIXED! (for me) (I am only talking about HEARING the sounds, not about problems when using the microphone etc.)

Personally, I found a fix! At first, I thought, it was just my browser - when I used another one, sound was working.

But then I discovered that the reason must be the adblocker (AdGuard). After turning it off, sound is working now!

I found the bug report system and sent this: Sound on "Type what you hear" pages is unavailable and cannot be obtained by reclicking the speaker button, randomly, for 80% of such pages. No problems from Feb'07 to Aug'07 but in Sept'07 the problem started. I tried a combination of 4 browers (Chromium, Vivaldi, Internet Explorer, GoogleChrome) on 3 operating systems (Ununtu, Windows7, Chromebook).       Sound is a continuing problem across all the language groups I am learning. The spoken sound only works for part of the sentence. 25% - 30% of the sentence has no sound. Sometimes the slow version is better, but far from always. Example sentence: "My name is Marie" can only be heard as "My name is M...." The rest is guesswork. This is a general error.

      I'm having this problem in Chrome. Every time I open Duolingo, the sound doesn't work. But if I begin an exercise, then quit and restart Chrome, then start the exercise again, the sound almost always works, though sometimes it stops again after a few exercises.
