Sound not working, unable to answer questions,
Duo lingo please fix
A mi me dejó de funcionar con firefox desde julio hasta diciembre de 2018 y ahora ya me ha vuelto a funcionar, pueden probar de nuevo o instalar firefox que es multiplataforma.
It has been more than one year, and this problem is ongoing. Developers don't seem to care about it at all. But this is such an annoying problem every time, 'type watch you hear' without hearing anything! I tried every possible solution even restarting the sound drive and it didnt work out
Duolingo sound worked fine on my old computer. I just got a new one with the latest internet explorer and I cannot do a lesson due to lack of sound. Duolingo suggested downloading the latest flash version, which I just did. Still no sound... I get sound just fine with all other programs. I am so disappointed because Duolingo every day. Please fix this!
Having the same problem -- sound was working perfectly for one week, and then just stopped. Any suggestions? Duolingo suggested that it was my flash player, but it is up to date.
I'm having a sound issue as well. I have no problem on other sites. I've closed and reopened my browser and tried logging out and back in. Yesterday it was working fine. I first noticed the issue around 2300 GMT Feb 25. I'm using IE 11 on Win 7.
It has been an on/off problem for months. Now (2014 Aug 15) having booted and re-booted my laptop and checked various settings DUOLINGO WILL NOT RECORD A THING! Checked to ensure that SKYPE was hearing me OK and no problem at all. I've wasted lots of time which was supposed to go to learning. DL please fix this bug.
I am having the same problem, the sound cuts out so I need to refresh the test to get it working again. Sometimes it can go for long periods with sound then other days it cuts after the first round. Not good for the listening exercises.
I'm sure Duolingo is trying their best to solve this problem. But this post is 5 month ago, and I'm being new here just experienced it recently. This could turn someone off. Yes Duolingo ! Please fix it.
I didn't have that issue with my iPad, so I went back to using that for the lessons. I use the computer for discussions.
Sadly, I've seen not a shred of evidence that DL are trying to resolve this problem. Let alone trying their best
I'm not able to hear anything either. For the record, I'm using the latest version of Chrome on a Windows 7 computer.
Here we are 5 years later and this problem still exists. My best guess is that it is with Flash, but that problem should go away in another year or 2. Adobe has stopped support for the Flash drivers. They are too difficult to maintain. So now people have to migrate to HTML.
If you can't get your speakers to work, try turning them off in "Settings".
The speakers work for everything but the sentence/phrase. I can hear the ding it gives for a correct answer, I can listen to itunes etc. But it won't let me skip the question (if I click on the skip button, it tells me I answered incorrectly, and knocks me off a heart).
please tell me I do not have to use internet explorer and pretend it's 1997
Because the problem is intermittent, it is not a settings problem, and seems to happen on both Mac and PC. it appears that the problem is widespread enough that Duolingo needs to address an internal glitch. Great site, and I wish they would.
My belief is that we actually have two problems with similar symptoms.
1. An Intermittent Problem and; 2. A Permanent Problem.
WHEN it is an intermittent problem I agree with you that DL needs to fix the problem. Please everyone click on the left hand side "Support" tag and send DL a message as they clearly do not monitor this discussion.
But when it is a permanent condition changing the settings on Flash to always allow duolingo.com does appear to fix that problem.
el problema que tengo ahora es nuevo para mi, en mi iPhone. No puedo oir de vez en cuando algo de "type what you hear" y tambien no funciona para "speak this sentence" - toco el microphone, pero no funciona!
It's happening again. It happened yesterday, and then this morning it seemed to be working ok, now it's not working again. Can we have an explanation please?
Everybody is having problems with this, no matter what software that they have. Duolingo needs to make their lessons more compatible with different softwares so it can be more user friendly.
It is extremely frustrating that the sound -- after so many complaints -- is still not fixed. Nevertheless, the course keeps submitting student challenges to voice a particular sentence or a word, then complaints since it did not capture my voice. Would you, please, suspend forcing the part of exercises that invokes what you can not "hear" until you fixed the problem. Thank you!
You can switch the microphone off in "settings" and be free of the repeated injunctions to speak. My Android voice recognition has not worked for a year or so. Duolingo appears to take no notice of this defect.
Since I started using Microsoft Edge for learning on Duolingo, the sound works OK. In the past I had used Chrome - the issues occurred.
MY ADVICE - Try different browsers ;)
From personal investigations in the past, I think this answer is correct: The problem is with some cross-site security (Duolingo trying to play sounds from a different site via https protocol). Chrome with strong security settings may consider this a security risk, and decide not to play, Edge may decide this is no security risk and play it.
Thanks Peter-Had changed to Monzilla Fox and was better. Now will try Microsoft Edge.
I use Microsoft Edge and I still have this problem. Today (16-5-2019), I tried to test out of a level and lost all three hearts because there was no audio on 'type what you hear' questions. This has been happening more since I switched to PLUS - so, I'm paying for this! Very annoying.
I'm having a similar issue. The sounds on my computer do not work, even though the questions can be read aloud.
So, not sure if someone found a solution, but using CHROME browser, all sounds are active and working and microphone works like a charm, but when clicking on any activities that involve the speaker icon, nothing works (and therefore the lesson item is marked incorrect).
The only solution I have found is to turn the speaker OFF and that eliminates that portion of the lesson from the plan (but doesn't help with why it isn't working in the first place).
Hey guys. I had such problem on windows 10 (Chrome). This may happen cause you may have multiple different sound cards set up on your computer. So to fix this problem just try to select another sound card in sound settings.
Day 1 was no problem. Day 2 the voice function stopped. I cannot fix. I have a Windows phone. Help!
So, if so many people are having problems, what if anything is Duolingo doing to help. It's the only program I use that has these problems.....so frustrating especially since it's such a great language learning program.
im trying german french italian and irish (gaelic just started today so I'm very excited about that one) and they each appear to have the same problem with the sound. I inform duolingo by going to the selections lower left to say sound not working but it doesn't appear to fix the problem. I seem to have a great run of the sound continuously working and then times when it barely works at all. I love the site for all the information but it invalidates when the sound cuts out and you have no idea what anything means especially when you are trying these out for the first time. I sincerely hope they fix the sound for us. It can be brilliant for weeks and then kaput. I am very grateful to Duolingo for this amazing opportunity. it is truly wonderful!!! ok that's my gripe for the day. :):) happy lingos
After suffering the same problem many times in the past and having a total failure of DL to hear about 2 weeks ago I did considerable analysis and came to the conclusion that when DL refused to "hear" at all the problem was associated with an update of Adobe Flash. So I went in and changed some Flash settings and DL recovered its hearing - please don't ask me which settings I changed but I did the same on both of my computers with the same positive result.
However this does NOT account for the intermittent problems I had yesterday when DL turned a deaf ear to me just the odd time or why, a little later, it went completely deaf and I had to turn off the sound to complete a lesson. Then log-out and log-in again; turn the sound back on thus curing the hearing problem.
All in all this is a very frustrating, time-wasting problem that DL should have sorted out by now. Over to you DL.
I think I can confirm this. I updated Flash Player on my three computers and there goes duolingo for me until I get an older version or they adapt to the new one.
Thanks for adding your confirmation. This evening around 22:30 GMT there is a very, very long lag between me speaking and the DL response which I first thought was the Flash problem. As a non-techie I don't know what is causing this.
Same problem with sound. I hear bits and pieces of words—or sometimes nothing.
Same probleme here: Can't hear, and can' record using the app on my iPhone. Reboted iPhone without success. My problems started after I began to use Chrome on PC parallell with iPhone connecting my PC to a headset with mic. The frequency of using duolingo (on any platform) has for above reasons dropped. What to do?
Have you checked your Flash settings on your computer? (See above) Assuming you're running Windows different browsers use different Flash versions right now. I found when I used, the hated (by me) Internet Explorer when Firefox sound didn't work that IE did but I hated the way it treated copying so went back to FF and tweaked the Flash settings to always allow DL. Now, for the most-part, the sound works. If you're on Mac sorry to have wasted your time.
Actually, I found a solution that works for me! I thought I had a problem only with DuoLingo, but it seems that I have a sound issue with my iPhone. The ringing sound and some alarms are working well, but I can not hear any volume when listening to videos (and DuoLingo). I then checked the AirPlay icon below on my phone when I was looking on a video (with no sound for me...), and it seems that it was stucked on "Docking" - it was not possible to choose the iPhone icon since this was missing. This means that the audio was send to "Docking" and not the iPhone! I do not have any docking station, so what to do? After some search, I found the solution to this issue: It is th charger/cable I have in my car! Yesterday I went out in my car, connected once more and disconnected. Voila - it works perfect again (DuoLingo and video audio). PS! I have also contacted DuoLingo support, and they tried promtly to help me out (no solution). If you need help - contact them (or google it), I assume they have no capacity to read this forum.
Recently Auto Play Stopped working. the incorrect and correct sound stopped working and sentences play only when i click on the play button. Fix soon please.
This just happened for me too... The other day, sound stopped working using Duolingo on my iPhone for several hours, and then learned other people were having the same problems on PC (whereas mine was fine). Yesterday, the autoplay and audio for the pictures exercises on the desktop site went out but the sound on my phone is fine. It's going back and forth, I swear :/
Just updated my iPad Air to IOS 8.0.2; lost sound, so unable to respond to the "type in what I hear" questions.
This advice does not help. This is an intermittent problem that is happening on various browsers on both Macs and PCs. In most all cases the sound will work fine with other programs or website but not with Duolingo!
The problem is still here (January 2015). i have windows 8, my computer's volume is on full, and no sound comes through.
My mic in duolingo used to be functional but now it always gives me "I can't hear you well". I tried to test my sound recorder, it functions well. I also tried online mic tester http://www.onlinemictest.com/ and my mic seems to be well. I just get the problem with Duolingo. Any help?
Hello, I updated the flash player as notified. But there is no sound for duolingo. Please fix. Thank you. Elisabeth Hurley
I've pinpointed when my sound stops working. In particular, it is when I miss or skip a microphone question.
Sound suddenly stopped working for me in the middle of an Italian lesson. Tried switching to Spanish to see if it was language specific, but it stopped working there too. Please fix!
I don't have sound neither so can't use my tablet to study at Duolingo.I am using Chrome on Windows 8. My sound from the settings in Duolingo is on. :/ The sound for Firefox ; Windows 7 is OK with me.
I have found a 'temporary' solution (that worked for me):
if you have a second tab with duolingo open (meaning two tabs of duolingo open), when the sound stops working, go to your other duolingo tab and scroll up and down. I find when i do this (specifically, it worked with this thread), then i found that almost immediately the sound came back (only to be lost every time i switched applications/tabs).
Audio does not work at all (at least for Swedish). I'm on Ubuntu 14.04 with firefox.
I just started I can't get though a practice without the sound cutting out :( I've tried on my windows phone, chrome and IE.
I'm on Chrome for Linux. I get sound out of YouTube but not Duolingo.
Please please please fix - sound just stops working suddenly - impossible to progress. This is going to cause me to stop using this - though I do not want to.
The missing sound will be a duolingo wide fault and not language specific. My android phone has not played sound for 2 days but the pc does. I've checked the settings. Sound plays on other phone apps. I note that when I select a lesson the speaker icon and wifi icons disappear.
I had this issue in the Android App, on CyanogenMod Android.
My solution was to turn off AdioFx and restart the phone.
The sound in French has become distorted. I do not have this problem on any other applications, including a French course that I am taking.
I have the same problem I'm learning french I couldn't hear the audio... in french pronunciation is a must
On my mobile app it is working, but not inside chrome/IE on windows 10 PC. I hear the ping on a correct answer so sound is working, but no speech..
PLEASE FIX THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm a little shocked that this is still a problem three years later. I have had it happen to me twice now in as many days: once in Chrome on an Android, and now in Firefox on MacOS. No amount of refreshing/restarting seems to correct the issue.
This problem is still present to this day, but in Norwegian course. Sentences are not fully spoken and i can't answer them correctly. They are always getting cut off in the middle or the last word of sentence. Something is happening to Duolingo, why are they not fixing things.
I am having problem for the past several days with Spanish! However, it is working fine when I use my i-Phone app! What is going on?! Duolingo, please help!
It appears, reading through these comments, the problem is with Duolingo. My headset/ microphone work everywhere else. It doesn't work for me in Chrome. Duolingo, this is the 21st century, people are using headsets with built in mics. Please fix this. It can't be that hard, no other application has such difficulty hearing someone speak.
Three weeks ago the sound problem was fixed and I can talk to the microphone and hear all what Duolingo (Spanish) is saying! It was nothing to do with the browser, it was Duolingo's issue got resolved!
I use duolingo on my laptop. (firefox/ubuntu/flashplayer are updated). I had sound at the beginnig, now it is completely silent. (mp3, youtube, ... are fine) I really like duolingo but these sound issues are very frustrating! (it seems that the half community has similar problems)
over here i can press the mic button to start speaking but it somehow clicks by itself and marks the question as incorrect when i haven't finished speaking. please help
Sound effects works on my computer but it stopped working few days ago on my phone which is Samsung Galaxy S6
Sound not working on my smartphone but ok on my laptop. Please help as I cannot answer questions
please help m e, I have done an official test but they did not give me my score because i did not inserted it before and now i cannot fix this problem even with the solutions they gave me
It happens very often in the middle of the lesson, regardless of the language! Annoying especially when I have just a few exercises left and hearts are running low! Annoying, too, when I am at the end of the lesson with all my hearts intact and have to start it all over again, not knowing if I will be stuck again or not.! Please fix it, Duo. (browser: Safari)
Curiously, the sound on my iPad will work for half a lesson and then kick out. The only way to reset the sound is to shut the iPad down and restart thereby losing my progress in the lesson. Aggravating ! There should be a way to complete lessons without the need for sound.
happening for me most of the time for the last 2 days - firefox, edge & chrome
21 Sept 2017 - The problem is so bad that I'm looking for an alternative Irish language course. Can any kind soul offer recommendations?
I am facing the same problem. The french audio does not work. Using the latest version of Google Chrome. All drivers up-to-date.
Safari 7.0.1 - I am not getting any sound from the site whatsoever from the site (other sites - like Pandora - have sound, and so do any applications on my computer)
I come back everyday to see if fixed yet, nope. I lost my sound the day I got the new layout design here.
Guys et gals, if you haven't already done, please vote for this topic so that its gets a higher priority on the discussion board.
I'm using an iPad & the sound was working for some of the activities but not others. Will try again today
Although I just tried it in Chrome and the sound seems to work now. Seems browser-specific.
all I use is chrome and I've had the same issue. Sometimes the sound comes through, sometimes it doesn't
Same here. Mine stopped about one month ago. Thank goodness I moved to Italy anyway. My listening proficiency tanked at first because of this Duolingo audio error, but being spoken to in Italian by real Italians in an immersion environment forced it to rise. "Learn it or die, brain" basically. Still it would be so nice if DL fixed this problem. It'd be great to continue studying at night.
It has happened to me as well, on and off, but there's one time I was in timed practice and I waited in vain for the sound of the phrase to write and it didn't come, even with clicking to the sound button. Other sounds would work fine, it's just sometimes the loading (it seems) of the phrase.
I'm having the same issue. Some questions play sound while others do not. Refreshing restarts the whole lesson and skipping the question knocks off a heart.
I have same the problem. Yesterday, sound stopped working completely. I'm using duolingo app.
Same problem and I can't loose any more hearts. I'm struggling enough as it is!!
I can't get the sound on duolingo on my desktop at all, so I mostly study on my iphone. but I like the extra features on the computer so I want to play here! It says that I have to try adding duolingo to my flash blocker white list. Can't find THAT anywhere? I have a Mac OSX and am on web server Safari. Is Firefox any more reliable? Frustrating...I love this way to study, but want the full effect!
It is frustrating. I've gone back to using my iPad for the lessons and checking online for the discussions, but it would be nice to use the online without feeling like I'm rolling the dice on whether the sound or mic is going to go out in the middle of a lesson.
Safari (6.1.3) on MacPro(OSX 10.7.5) with the latest Flash player (13.1) installed gets no sound in Duo, neither feedback chimes or clicking on the speaker icons. Tried Firefox with same result: error message: "we can't play sound in your browser" Other apps (iTunes etc) working fine.
Using Chrome, I also have this problem. Some of the Type What You Hear questions work, others don't. It seems like when one question goes "mute", the rest in that lesson also go mute. The dings work fine and other types of questions work fine.
Yes, please fix this problem. I can hear everything but the recorded piece that I need to move through a lesson....impossible to progress because I have to continuously hit skip to get to the next question....very, very frustrating!
It recommend doing something with flash but I forgot exactly what. ( duo lingo had a pop up
Under yopur Profile, have you gone to Settings, Account and checked the Microphone and Speaker options?
I don't know if some of you got it fixed, but for me it isn't working. I'm on google chrome, latest version, drivers updated...
I can talk into the microphone, but the sound does not come out when I try to hear what it is saying
This sucks, no matter what I try I cannot get the sound to work. It feels like i am deaf.
It was mainly on my ipad, i think it might be an overheating thing... It works fine on my Os X 10.9.4
My sound quit working on my iPhone 4s, and when I upgraded to an iPhone 6, I still didn't have sound. Worked with the Apple people trying to resolve issue, but nothing worked: deleting app and reinstalling, doing a "restore" on the phone and then reinstalling. Didn't help. Still no sound. The Apply rep installed Duolingo on his iPhone while we were talking and guess what? He had sound.
This is really crazy.
it keeps tell me that the sound won't be working. it says that if i have flash block i should add the website but i don't. please fix for safari especially
I also have a problem with playing sound on safari, it was working few days ago but since yesterday it is not.
Still not able to hear the Spanish speaker on my android tablet despite logging off and back in. Reinstalled flash player for Android tablet but still no sound on this app.
6 Januari 2015 and DL is still having sound problems. For me sound usually doesn't work on the first question and it shows me a pop up telling me sound is diabled. On the other questions sound does work, but sometimes it takes very long for the sound to work. Today I haven't been able to get any sound at all.
I had this issue with the iPad App and solved it with a restart of the device
The microphone and sound function does not work well! I use my laptop microphone with may other applications (e.g., Rosetta Stone, Skype, etc.) and never have a problem. I will not use this app any longer until the microphone/sound function is fixed.
same problem here. was working and then suddenly stopped at the start an a new french lesson. Chrome and macbook air. restarted brower and computer makes no difference :(
I have just had this problem and tracked it down (it might be a different cause for you). I have 5.1 speakers, and in the Windows sound config menu I ran a test. All speakers were working fine except the middle one. It appears that the voice from DL comes exclusively from this speaker (if you have one).
So after fixing my issue (a very slightly loose wire) and testing it in windows, DL is back working for me.
I realise this won't be a fix for all, but it might help someone out there.
Got the same issue with Swedish on a macbook. Fixed it by selecting another device for sound output then selected internal speakers again.
Thx Omar I tried but still same problem....either draging the cursor on the blue icon or clicking and holding on the blue icon....
Have WIN 8.1 + Firefox 37.0.1.(Latest). Everything OK with DL, except that my vocal answers stopped to be heard around the 4:th of April 2015. That time WIN had a major update. Opening DL gives "We can't play sound in your browser". Cannot find any "Flash blockers" or anything else blocking voice signals. Have COMODO firewall, but they could find no problems.
i have adobe shockwave flash 126.96.36.199 and had it, when my sound did not work. So it doesn't seem to guarantee the sound in duolingo. I am not sure if this is what you meant mohammadreza94.
I had the same problem. A while ago I was reading a thread where they said, that it may has something to do with your sound software or something - because I have a 5.2 system connected and duo needs stereo, so you will have to change your sound options from 5.2 or surround/ whatever to stereo.
But this solution was to complicated for me - see, I don't want to change this thing all the time, only because I am doing some minutes on duo. And FINALLY It hit me - what's the easiest way to get your sound to stereo - plug in some in ear speakers! ... I tried that, and it worked perfectly.
Maybe you should also try it. Sorry if that's not the thing for everybody...
I can't hear the speaker at all anymore, although it used to come on now and then. Please, can some moderator find the solution? Thanks?
My sound isn't working, and it won't move past pronouns. It was good when it worked, but it falls apart. Please fix these issues. I can see someone above asked multiple times to fix the sound and you never answered. Get out of biz before you go out.
That is not the problem. The sound issue is intermittent so it is a problem with the website.
That appears to be true. I have sound reception without difficulty, but the speaking exercises have been present on only 3 occasions in the past year enduring each time for one lesson only.
I wish Duolingo would SPEAK when it presents a foreign sentence and make the postive sound when I get something right, it works okay on my android but not on the desktop site.
The problem is in OUR SETTINGS, go to account settings and turn on the speaker :)
Yep, that happened to me too and it was resolved after turning the speaker option on again.
same problem, when I click one of the three images to answer the question it doesn't say in loud voice what I choose, and when I make the correct answer I don't hear the "ding-ding" sound anymore
Thanks. Not sure how Mango compares overall to DL, but -- Heck -- the sound works in exactly the same environment in which DL fails. Unless DL can fix this, they're unfortunately doomed.
I used google chrome and disable the add blocker and now it works fine. Not sure if it is by chance or it is because the add blocker prevents duolingo to work properly. Mozilla and Explorer don't work
Just tried to start up my duo lingo on my iPad after two weeks not using it, the app turns on for less than 10 seconds then is inactive. What is the fix. I do not want to start over as I am almost done the entire program .helppppp
I am taking a Dutch test however the sound does not work so I cannot answer those questions. Is there an issue with the website?
it can't hear me at all but all settings correct on mac & duolingo. Please fix.
You can turn the questions requiring a microphone off in the account settings.
Yes. For me it dings when i get it correct or incorrect. but the type what you hear isn't working
I have the same problem and I can not continue working. I am so sad. Downloaded new flash and still not working. Is there a way to solve the problem?
I cannot answer questions on my ipad, the message says it will be back in 1 hour. Please fix.
You need to make sure that you check your settings. The sound could be turned off.
Your Duolingo settings
This has just happened to me. I have tried all bI can think of and still no sound in Spanish level13. Phil Greenwood
Mine has started today , really frustrating . Also On the last question of the lesson it pinged I had answered correctly but then the button to enable me to finish didn't light up . Have tried 4 times already .. Have answered 80 questions in total with no score .
My sound is off I cannot hear the french questions can you tell me how to get it back on the speaker
How do I get my sound working again in the french lessons I dont know how to get the speaker to work I can't hear the questions
Duolingo voice recognition not functioning from May 30thdAndroid, 2016. Speech recognition functioning normally, otherwise. Please fix the problem.
When I get the question correct, the sound works. But when I need to type what I hear, the sound doesn't work. What gives? Checked my sound settings, and it all seems in order.
I am using my laptop on Chrome. It usually works but today..nope
2017 and this stuff is still not working properly. I can't believe I still have to complain about this. I can't wait for self driving cars to hit the road....
As a workaround the desktop version should also have the option to skip the tests which require sound
Sorry, psn, your solution doesn't work. The problem is that if I am asked to "type what you hear" and I can't hear a thing, I can skip the question, only to see it pop up again, and again, whiteout sound. It often happens especially when I am at the end of the exercise. Often, I can't finish exercises where I had no mistakes because once I am faced with the "no sound issue" there is no way out of it. When it happens, I stop Duo altogether and call it a day. Very frustrating! Someone suggested turning off the sound in "settings" -- If you do that in the middle of the lesson, it cancels everything you had done to that point. Besides, it's a sporadic problem. And, what is more, who would wants to do a foreign language program without sound?!
I think you misunderstood my comment, I was talking about the mobilapp's can't play sound right now feature, which should be part of the desktop version too. If you choose this feature, the question won't appear in the lesson.
You're right, psn, I misunderstood you, but now that you explained that you were referring to the exercises that require voice recognition, I would like to note that my confusion came from the fact that most of us are complaining that "we can't hear" Duolingo, not the other way around -- And if we can't hear, how can we "type what you hear?" -- My long explanation is more meant to the Duo staff, if they are reading the comments, than to you. I'm still hoping they will be able to correct the problem. Congratulations to you for having reached 25 in 3 languages, and 20 in another! Quite impressive.
I am having this same issue. Tried in Chrome, in incognito, with a new user profile, and in a different browser. Tried all the suggestions on the "what to do when there's no sound" page.
My speakers are working. I can hear the duolingo site, its various sound effects. I cannot hear any VOICES from the site. Therefore I cannot complete lessons that contain "type what you hear" components.
Hi Good Evening,
I also unable to answer voice questions if using web page version of duolingo. Using mobile phone duolingo is fine.
I am using opera for mac version 47.0.2631.83 under Mac OS X 10.12.6 64 bit. Microphone is using Apple earphone with remote and mic.
I've been using Duo on my Android phone exclusively since this began. But there are things available.on PC not available.on phone that I don't use, then. But it gives me freedom to move and get FitBit steps, so I do a lot more the! And again I'd like to remind that this affects other language programs. My husband thinks it's a Windows 10 issue.
I've been doing the Irish course. After I got past the first few lessons, I found that that the sound didn't always work. In every lesson, there are a few exercises that show the blue speaker button but which make no sound when I click on it.
I have the same problem, intermittently losing the sound. I have tried reloading the page and that is a temporary solution. I have checked my settings, they are all okay. It is a problem with the website. It is very annoying. Duolingo - please fix or give advice. Thank you
What did they say? How was the problem resolved for you? Has it reoccurred?
I recently got a microphone and everything was okay for a few days. Today my sound knocked out in the middle of two different lessons, the second after I restarted the computer. I checked after closing Duolingo the second time and the sound returned. Definitely a glitch on the site. Annoying. Please fix.
Today I had problems with both the speakers and the microphone going in and out during lessons. I had finally had to give up working on the computer and switch to the iPad to finish for the day. :-( Seems to be a network issue on Duolingo's end.
The sounds till goes out in the middle of a lesson if I try to do it on my PC, so I've gone back to doing lessons just on my iPad.
gityl: your solution (plugging stereo earplugs) reinforces my suspicion that many problems with Duolingo Sound are associated with the computers of us, the listeners. Oft heard request for Duolingo to fix the problem may be misplaced. It may be not possible for Duolingo to fix this problem.
I didn't work for me. And I tried iPad, MacBook and iPhone. So, is it a problem between Duolingo and Safari? (probably not, as I see that Chrome and Firefox's users, among other browsers, are also having the same problem.) I don't think it's acceptable that Duo will not fix it. Besides the frustration of not being able to finish a lesson (or lessons,) what's the point of being deprived of sound when one is learning a foreign language?
After 6 months using Duolingo with no probs, the Spoken questions are mute - pointless! This is appalling and very discouraging. Learning Irish is not easy, but this turns a hard job in to a handicapped hard job. Getting messages from Duolingo to practice every day is like a reminder to suffer the handicap more regularly.
I now have it working on Windows Edge on my PC, and strangely it's never been a problem for my Samsung phone using Chrome. We think it's a Windows 10 issue, to get us to use Edge? This is further annoying, because someone made a wonderful add-on for Chrome that changes your keyboard back and forth for languages like Greek, Russian and Vietnamese for Duo writing exercises. (It's discussed somewhere here, but I can't access it from my phone.) And BTW, other language programs I use, like Living Language (which has some free 'lab' activities) and the beta ai.glossika.com, which has some free stuff also have the same issue, so it isn't really a Duo thing. I didn't have this kind of issue with Rosetta Stone last I used it about a year ago.
Hi thank you very much for your great software there something wrong with the speaking part please help me
I was in the middle of a lesson and the sound stopped working. Could you please fix it?
I found the bug report system and sent this: Sound on "Type what you hear" pages is unavailable and cannot be obtained by reclicking the speaker button, randomly, for 80% of such pages. No problems from Feb'07 to Aug'07 but in Sept'07 the problem started. I tried a combination of 4 browers (Chromium, Vivaldi, Internet Explorer, GoogleChrome) on 3 operating systems (Ununtu, Windows7, Chromebook). Aslo tried all possible combinations of microphone/speaker/etc settings on the Duolingo App as well as on the browsers and O/Ses. The fault is the same on all combinations. The app is virtually unusable now.
Every now and then it happens to me too. A real bummer cause I can't finish my lesson then...
This discussion makes me sad. I get this is a free service, but Chrome is one of the 3 most used browsers - I would have thought duolingo would've made it a higher priority. Guess I have to use Firefox for these exercises.
The voice will play for me but it cuts out before it is finished. I can't use the can't listen now button at all now. I have to guess what was at the end of the sentence and then remember the corre t answer and retry the question at the end of the lesson....
Having sound issues with Danish on ios. Works for a bit, then it doesn't, I reinstall or sign out or both and it is fixed. A couple of exercises and it's gone again. Also, ads don't seem to load properly, just black screen with cross and I have to get out of app altogether. Very annoying. Playing on android now but miss my Health!!
I also had this problem with Android 8. Gave the app access to microphone and restarted the app. Now audio works.
Whatever I say, Duolingo doen't hear and marks as if I've been pronouncing it wrong. I tried this in German-English, but same problem is with English-Russian. Please fix this.
Thats funny because I had this problem a year ago but now its fine and works, but it might just be the device you are using. I got a new computer and now it works perfect.
I can confirm that this is happening to me with Esperanto (on Chrome). I'm not getting any audio on the 'Type what you Hear' questions.
Your mileage may vary, but I resolved the issue on my end by going to my account settings and turning off both 'speaker' and 'sound effects,' saving the changes and then turning them both back on and saving again. Could be a quick fix for many of you, so give it a try.
I am using Duolingo on my android phone, so the soilund is not working so I am not able to respond to the audio questions. Please help
I experienced this problem using internet explorer so I switched to google and it went away
make sure hat you enabled the speaker for duolingo you can change this inyour settings
The sound works 2 times and later don't work. Each time that I use Duolingo in Firefox with GNU/Linux.
Having similar problems. Sound is working in the middle of a lesson and then just stops. Going to my settings, turning sound and sound effects off and saving and then back on and saving does NOT solve the problem. Please fix.
Unable to hear sound on my Mac, while it works fine on my iPhone. I have checked my Duolingo sound settings and all the sound outputs are on. I have also turned them off and back on again.
Ĝi nun funkcias bone en Firefox. Funciona por fin en Firefox. It woks now in Firefox.
When I try and use my headset (which I have used without troubles for 1 year) it now asked if Dulingo can use the microphone, but when I push allow nothing happens. Anyone know how to fix this?
Jesus Christ this problem still exists. Not giving any money to these people.
This problem is very annoying. Half way through a lesion and the sound stops and so you cannot answer the question and lose a life then eventually you fail the whole lesion. Whats the point of carrying on?
this seems to happen to me during spanish lessons. Seems to happen after a few lessons. The sound just stops working. It occurs while doing lessons from the duolingo website and not when using the app on my phone. This is not caused by any settings or failure of any devices on my computer.
Ah, ok... so this is a website thing. I tried Chrome and Safari. Sometimes works. I guess we can't complain too much... it's free... but I'm sick of "failing' because I can't write "The turtle bought a book for the boy who like to say 'what's up' to the owl" or whatever you want me to write.
This has gone on long enough now the ruin the experience. How can you finish lessons without sound. Answers marked wrong when you cannot hear the questions
I just tested out of subjunctive in French and it took like 100000 tries because every time it went on a listening I just couldn't do it because there wasn't any audio...
5 years on, still not solved for ios. As described above, sound tends to disappear after several exercises and in everything - there are three types of sounds at duo, and all of them mute, at times suddenly giving one or two words or sentences, then silenced again.
Check button not working on my iPad. Never used to have this problem, I've tried using a different iPad, still the same problem. Really disappointing
A massive (and frustrating) update in French but still nothing done to to fix the constant loss of sound which seems to be even more frequent. Surely this is one of the most important aspects of language!
Getting very frequent now- halfway through a lesson and it cuts out!!! again and again
I use linux and I learn Japanese, and there is no sound, please fix that. thanks for your time.
Again the sound just stops. It is frustrating to have the new question and no sound so that you know that the last ten minutes have been a complete waste of time. Why does duolingo do this????
Intermittent sound on questions so cannot answer. I am on 7 day trial but this will put me off staying
Sound is working perfectly until after three or four lessons. Sometimes sound disappear after I read lesson's explications. By logging out and in again I can solve it, but there should be a more permanent way to solve this problem.
Google Translate is your friend.
I've had a problem with sound ever since I switched to PLUS. Now I'm paying for the lessons, I seem to be getting problems I never had with the free programme! However, I seem to be getting a result by refreshing the page when there are audio problems. Sometimes I have to refresh up to 4 or 5 times to get a glitch-free delivery. I'm sure Duo will sort it out eventually!
Don't hold your breath, it seems to have been going on for years. My change to Firefox [yesterday] on a Mac seems to have fixed it for now.
I'm having this problem in Chrome. Every time I open Duolingo, the sound doesn't work. But if I begin an exercise, then quit and restart Chrome, then start the exercise again, the sound almost always works, though sometimes it stops again after a few exercises. The problem is obviously not with my browser or computer, the sound is working fine on every other site, it's a Duolingo bug, and it needs to be fixed. The fact that there are hundreds of comments in this thread, complaining about problems with sound in multiple browsers that go back at least five years, doesn't give me much hope that they'll actually do anything about it, but it's absurd that a website with so many users wouldn't address such a fundamental problem.
I just started having problems with this about a month ago, mainly with the "type what you hear" questions. also having trouble with the pronunciation's because the voices of the male, and female, and not coming on ((and my boom-box has no problems))
It's so frustrating! My progress has come to a grinding halt because if I can't hear the questions I can't give the answers. Please solve this hiccup!
I have 337 lingots. On my iPad screen is this: A problem repeatedly occurred on “https://www.duolingo.com/skill/fr/City-4/test”. Sound is also sporadic, and non-existent by dictation. Lessons simply turn themselves off and I must begin at the beginning every time. This is awful.
(date June 2019) This problem has been around sense 2015. It is a Duolingo problem. I believe it has to do with their Flash drivers. ->->->To get back up and running when your sound goes you need to rebood Duolingo.
I hope that they soon write new sound drivers, now that Flash is going to goway.
Now in June 2019 this problem still exists. I believe it has to do with the Flash drivers that Duolingo is using. Flash is a product that has been developed by Adobe. Adobe is going to stop supporting Flash very soon. Now we all have to hope that Dulongo moves on to HTML sooner rather than later. ->->-> To get going again when this problem arises I just reload Duolingo. Then I'm good again for a while.
Have a great day.
Thanks-I have changed to Monzilla Fox and though sound still does not work I no longer receive exercises where I have to speak and it cannot hear me. Will try Microsoft Edge. Thanks again!.
I finally tried Windows Edge, where it works!! I don't know what to do about Chrome. (It does seem to be a browser issue. But it may also be a Windows 10 thing, since Chrome works fine on my Samsung phone.
I contacted 2 other language programs that you pay for; Living Language and the new Glossika. I hope they'll work together to get it fixed.
For me this is not a browser issue as I have tried using Safari, Chrome and Firefox all with the same result. The sounds stops working during lessons. It usually happens after a few lessons. Sometimes at the beginning of say the 3rd or 4th lesson or sometimes in the middle of a lesson. Sometimes I can close out the lesson and reopen it and the sound is back and sometimes it does not come back unless I wait for some period of time before restarting a lesson. I have checked sound settings and it is not that either.
